Can anyone help ID this swivel housing?

Hey all

I've got yet another ID parts parade! Hoping someone will take pity on me because I'm at a total loss on this one.

I've got a 1986 Defender 90, which was modded when it came to me so I'm having a tough job figuring out what is what. Having completed the rear axle, I'm now at the stage where I'm overhauling the front axle.

I know the rear axle is Disco 1, and I thought the front axle was original Defender based on the brake calipers and info that I had, so I ordered a replacement Defender to KA swivel ball kit from Paddocks (http://www.paddockspares.com/da3167-swivel-kit-front-axle-to-ka930455.html).

However, now that I've stripped the old swivel ball off, I've realised that they are not the same at all. The main difference seems to be the upper pin which on the old part uses a bearing, whereas the new part is in a shaft with some kind of fibre-based collar. Also, the race that the old shaft sits in has a bevelled outer, again totally different to the new one.

I've taken a couple of photos of the old part. Looking at Defender, Disco 1 and even Range Rover upper swivel pins I can't find a match at all.

Is it just that the replacement parts for these are supposed to be different to the original? Or have I got some crazy oddball / mashup axle on my hands.

Any words of wisdom would be wonderful.

Cheers

Marcus

it is abs it would be from a disco possibly same as rear ,probably fitted to your early defender as the 300 tdi axles onwards have thin drive members to allow for alloy wheels, the chrome ball itself will take the pre 300tdi rialko bush as would have been fitted as std though im unsure if actual swivel housing will take the defender top pin

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

It is a 24 spline halfshaft.

The DA3167P kit is the one that I bought, which seems quite different from the original.

No worries Marmaduke. I've got it all here in front of me and it's pretty confusing!

Reckon I have a total mix of stuff on this axle because the brake calipers look like RTC4999 and RTC4998 :/

Thanks James, I think that's the ticket for the swivel.

Just got to figure out the brakes next. They look like RTC4999 and RTC4998. Would that make sense, given that the previous owner wouldn't have wanted to put ABS calipers on it?

are you after new calipers or just parts

Sorry should have been more specific - I have already bought RTC4999 and RTC4998 calipers (the old ones were properly seized). I just want to make sure they're the right ones.

as long as the 2 caliper securing bolts are a snug fit in caliper and you have just 1 pipe port it wont matter what calipers you fit

Just when you thought this thread was done...

So it seems I have some oddball hubs too. Anyone able to ID these? I can't find anything similar, with the recessed nuts.
