Disco 4 (LR4) Broken crank dilema

Hi all,

My 2010 (2011MY) 3.0 SDV6 has a broken crank.

I am trying to get it fixed as economically as possible.

My go to mechanic has decided it is too much for him to cope with so won’t help.

Two other mechanics i contacted showed interest but have also disappeared.

I went to a specialist today who refuses to fit anything but a new/recon crate motor.

I cannot find a sensibly prices used unit. Even if i did i cannot find a mechanic to fit it.

I went to an engine rebuilder today who said he would rebuilt the engine for roughly £1700 but i would need a new block most likely so back to the problem of finding an engine.

If i go this route i still don't have a mechanic to fit it.

I have been offered rebuilt engines via ebay from London and Birmingham for around £2.5k but again so far no one to fit them and i don't know really what I am buying. Could be scammers/ low quality.

Anyone got any ideas on how to approach?

Location is Wiltshire, near Warminste/Westbury.

I can’t recommend anyone to do the job but read thread…

Only one I know of with a decent name is QP Online Maidstone, did hear they wont even look at a d4 with sus crank unless you pay them a huge chunk upfront, guess they have been bitten to often?


Sadly if you cannot diy then the car is scrap.

Cant offer any suggestions for garages, just sympathy. Thats a rough hand dealt

Bad luck as said if you can't diy then it's scrap have you looked on the tube at the great LRtime d4 engine rebuild ? It will give you an invite as to how it's done

This does really need a dedicated legal team to sort the engine company out.

Ford said to use it. Peugeot made it.

Ford should really pay for this.

I am sure there was a whole thing going on on the d3/4 forum, possibly legal, one guy had a proper metallurgic engineer look into it.
I think the wise money sold up whilst the prices were high!

It's an old long term known issue. You will get no where down the legal route.

@bukko had his vehicle sorted in s e Essex, it would be interesting to know how it’s going?

hi I had a 2012 discovery 4 hse ….great machine but engine packed up so local garage quoted to high so saw post on ebay for a garage in wales who would come pick up and did a 10 day turnaround....prior to sending down I asked for video of garage and all looked good..vehicle left and few days...

Yes, they don’t repair and only wanted to fit a JLR supplied recon crate motor. Quote was £10k to £12k so they were a total waste of time.

True, but i bought it broken. It is criminal though.

Not having a go, but why did you buy it broken without looking into how to get it fixed first?

Usually the standard replace my engine questions are met with fit the greatest engine of all time.....200tdi

Search for disco mikey on the D3 forum and see how much he'd charge to fit a 3.6 there's an epic thread on there of him completely rebuilding his D3 with the 3.6 between customer cars. Dream combo

I think that is what they all do now, mainly for warranty purposes.
People have tried to rebuild them, and not with much success.

Iirc when the crank fails it damages the alignment of the block main bearing carriers making the engine non repairable.
