Just got my first land rover yesterday, Freelander XEi 1.8k. Pretty impressed to be honest. Its not as slow as i thought it would be and the build quality isnt that bad either.

Its in black, alloys etc and has a three receipts totalling a grand from the last four months, a lot of which was stuff that i would do myself. Its just had a new coolant rail fitted last week before i got it, started twitching when i saw bottles of water in the boot!

Still a bit paranoid, just want to keep an eye on the coolant etc to make sure its not going. Ordered up an inlet manifold gasket and timing belt today and will do them both in a oner.

Other faults are its missing a tweeter, rear diff is leaking and stinking, and the sunroof is knackered. From my research all pretty common complaints, sunroof is an annoyance because its stuck about 2mm open on one corner, like its just come off the rails. Least its warm.

From reading all the stuff that goes wrong im suprised the boots not full of water. Got a rattle somewhere annoying (think its the exhaust) and thats about it hopefully! Ill get amongst it this weekend.

Anyway heres a pic, Ive been with Rovers for about 8 years now so know my way around a K16 - still a little amazed that the thermostat is in the same place on these, total **** to get to.

Quick pic, hi to everyone.

The cooling system is identical to a lot of Rovers/MGs ive been under. I agree - its poorly designed on all, which is the usualy problem leading to HGF, but i certainly dont agree that the FL has anything remarkably different.

I agree on the fact that its got a lot more to pull and the drivetrain is different, but as for the engine itself there is no difference between this one and the one in a ZT, TF etc, so i totally disagree on that one.

And yes, as much as ive spent under a Rover i appreciate that Ks arent the best. But with the uprated HG, oil ladder and a decent drilled 'stat they can be just as useful as any other 1.8.

Haha, yeah fair one. Im not as naive in thinking that i wont have any problems, but id like to think i might have less problems than some bird who never checks the coolant level.

First thing to do is fit a low coolant warning lamp from a ZR :)
