Blue smoke

Hey guys, another one to pick your brains with.

(I own a 300tdi disco, 1994.)

So i have blue smoke, when i start the car, it starts blowing blue smoke, and even when engine is warm it blows blue smoke.

The smell is a rich smell, and has been described to me by others, as the sort of smell you get when you're running chip fat through your car.

This is happening around 2k revs, and i now can tell when it's doing it, as it almost feels like my car is being pulled backwards while i'm driving. (Best way for me to explain it!)

Happens often, when i'm crusing in 3rd gear at 2k revs. (That is about 30mph ish)

Spoke to a bloke from the AA, and he said it was most definitely the fuel pressure sensor, as in 3k miles i have lost very little, if any oil. So had that replaced, but to no avail. (Stupid AA man!)

But also, one thing that crossed my mind, was the fuel filter i have. The guy i bought it from, said he took it off of his combine, and fitted it on the LR?

So, ideas? Valve stem seals? Something to do with my turbo? Filters?

I'm lost now.

Blue/black smoke = burning oil usually. If it smokes when starting up after its been parked a while, then valve stems seals are likely culprit - what happens is oil from the rockers etc settles into the top of the cylinderhead and it seeps past the valve stem seals into the cylinders, so when you start the engine, the oil in the cylinders gets burnt, producing the smoke. Once thats been burnt off, no more smoke. As the oil doesn't get as much chance to pool in these nooks & crannies when the engine is running, the is much less chance of the oil getting past the valve stem oil seals unless they are truly cream crackered.

If it smokes when being driven as well, then that would indicate engine wear...

HOWEVER, you say it feels like the car is being dragged back when it smokes - this to me sounds more like a fuel mixture issue, so I'd look at the fuel pump adjustment (have you tweaked it too much?).

Given your description, I'd say its a fuel issue rather than vave stem seals...

I haven't personally tweaked with it at all. So i'd assume it might have been the previous guy? Would explain the diesely smell?

As i have no idea how to get it back to factory settings, so to speak, i guess the best option would be to buy a new fuel pump?

id expect black smoke if injection pump had been over tweaked especially on acceleration ,try with hose from intercooler to inlet off,oil loss from turbo can be checked by removing pipe from turbo to intercooler from turbo and running engine ,a poor injector can cause similar issues

Do a search. There should be plenty of threds about adjusting the fuel pump. You shouldn't have to buy another one. My last Disco had a "tweaked" fuel pump. It went like a rocket, puffed a little on start up but nothing more.

Have a search first, it's not too hard to turn it back a quarter turn if need be.

James, i've run redex through the car, as i did initially think of injectors, but it done next to nothing imo. But will do intercooler pipes tomorrow when i have some light

redex wont cure a poorly injector ,best to try some known good ones

Known good ones? Lol.

What are they? Where can i get them?

preferably from a mate or willingy person

I'm going to assume i can't just pop to Halfords then?

I have the same problem.

If I hold the revs at 2-3k it smokes to a trooper runs lumpy and blue/white smoke, when driving and I get to 2k revs and hold it I can feel it holding back/running lumpy blue/white smoke, also get to 2k let off slightly and reapply then it smokes the same blue/white.
