Picking up a front axle off a discovery next week and the plan is to rebuild it and eventually swap it onto my 110 hicap.

I'm great at taking things apart, it's just the putting stuff back together that proves tricky... :D
So I was looking for advice - what to replace, what brands are sh*t, where to grease and where to locktite etc

Get a manual or atleast look up a parts diagram online so you know what goes where and the tourqe settings

Go for timken wheel bearings if you want them to last and bearmach do a good swivel kit for around £35 a side without the ball

Here's mine from last autumn. It starts with the back axle but keep scrolling and there are some pictures of doing the front a bit further down

With the axle off the car it's a good opportunity to replace as many bearings, seals and gaskets as you can. Mine was a kind of rolling rebuild so I didn't take everything off and wire brush it and paint it.
Try and keep off Britpart's cheap own-brand stuff. I got most of my bits and pieces from LR Direct as they allow you to choose brands.

Thanks, I'll check that out now! :)
That's my thinking and then I can just swap it at my leisure and sell the old one... I'll be sure to post plenty of photos... And even more questions!

So timken for bearings and avoid britpart for the rest... Got it.

I don't really have anywhere to do this, garage spend so it's going to be under a tarp unfortunately.

Having a manual is good. Having 2 different manuals/parts list/diagrams is better. Even so, some things will not be clear. With a digital camera you can take loads and loads of photos as you disassemble, giving you a better chance of getting everything together easily.

Oh, and try to put bits back where they came from - drivers side bits back in drivers side etc. That way any tolerances will match as they do now. Or am I out of date here?

I'd love to do a full rebuild on my truck but I don't have the space, money or time... So this seemed like a good warm up :)

By manual, what do you mean - I have a Haynes manual not sure how in depth that goes in the axles? And parts diagrams online?

Does the discovery axle have the same part number as a defenders, if not any idea what it is? For when I'm ordering parts...

Haynes manuals arent the best but it may give you a break down of parts and tourqe settings and there will be parts diagrams online just google it

All part numbers may not be the same but not sure ? best to order any parts for the age and engine of disco the axle came from

You don't need a manual to build up the axle, it's really easy.
When you pick up the axle I will show you how to do it.

Hopefully between the Haynes and Internet I should be fine.
And cheers spencer, that'd be very helpful!

I just need to get back from Norway and pick the axle up now...

I did mine in the street and in the dining room. Obviously I'd be more comfortable in a garage but I don't have one.
If you have 20 minutes to waste have a look at these two changing an engine in the car park of a car accessories store.
