Actually - all of what I wrote comes purely from personal experience (about 100K miles of it on M51 and 300tdi engines). The nitrile rubber part has been tested on the seals between my fluid-fluid heat exchanger and the filter head. First time I fitted a seal I made myself there (the standard seal didn't fit right onto the P38 filter head) started sucking in air after a week or so, and while I was taking it out it came apart in a number of pieces, and there were small rubbery bits all over the place inside.

In distinct contrast, viton seals that I switched to using after that do not exhibit the same deterioration. They shrink slightly and harden, but they don't disintegrate.

You are mixing with petrol, I am talking about mixing with diesel. Petrol is considerably better as a thinning agent, but can also cause issues with injectors gumming up faster and the fuel pump will wear out somewhat quicker, too, because it relies in lubrication properties of diesel to reduce wear. Vegetable oil has different lubrication properties, and petrol will make the problem worse. You might still get tens of thousands of miles out of it, but it'll be less than you would if you were purely mixing with diesel.

Heavy soot won't get through the 0.5 micron filter. Water will settle out, same as it does from vegetable oil, along with all the other crap. Unlike with vegetable oil, it'll still be black, though, so you can't easily tell where the crud at the bottom ends and the usable stuff begins in the settling tank.

Ok Gordan and Johnnycrash are both right in there views............. But the end decision is the owner of the motor and what they are willing to pay for higher maintenance costs in the long haul of ownership. So let peeps make google there friend spend some time looking and reading. Lots of good technical info out there, as a lot of uni's have conducted years of studies on SVO use.

Opinion are like body parts everyone has One, But expert studies are priceless in this case.

Well ok - then as I have a seal set at home I'll pop one into a jar of oil and we shall see what happens over a few weeks

Running Veg oil even with petrol or diesel or both will have no detrimental effect on the pumps lubrication, the key to running successfully on Veg is viscosity – ensure your fuel is of similar viscosity to pump Diesel -/+10% and your system will be fine for many thousands of miles. Also you will notice a slight increase in MPG

NEVER mix black with veg oil or Bio – the system will require flushing and running on dino juice before you can switch. Black will give you even better MPG again over Veg oil and while Veg or Bio smoke is clear (not visible from the exhaust) Black diesel will make your car smoke!!

Black diesel is brilliant stuff if made correct and yes you do need to run it through a centrifuge Filtering down to 0.5 micron is not sufficient! - I do 3 passes and yes it remains black, I have a method to make clear diesel from WMO but this isn’t for here ;-)

I had a quick google earlier and to be fair me old gaylander dont owe me a penny so if it went bang id just turn it into a project and try and squeeze a V8 in it, **** or bust for me :D

Johnnycrash you forgot to add working temps and high pressure to your experiment on seals in vegetable oils, sitting in a jar is not the same as in a injector pump under high pressure or injectors

Are you sure the seal set you have is nitrile rubber rather than viton? My seals start off as a 3mm sheet, and I cut them out using hole punches (54mm inner diameter, 75mm outer diameter). Note that in my use-case there are also elevated temperatures involved because the whole assembly is heated up to 90C by the coolant.

True however one would expect to see at least some level of distortion swelling or shrinkage??

And heat and pressure are constant regardless of fuel so the seals are designed to cope with these factors

The seals might be able to cope with the heat and pressure with regular diesel, but when you are adding vegetable oil to the mix it will accelerate the degradation the seals will suffer due to the vegetable oil.

Thats that done, had a quarter tank of Diesel and topped it up with 18ltrs of Veg oil :D

Unfortunatly i sent the wife as she was going shopping anyway......she didnt go Asda she decided to go Sainsbury's instead and spent £4.10 for 3ltrs of their homebrand...... Correct, she turned a cheaper fuel into more expensive than diesel from the pump :doh::doh:

Never mind
Just think of all those Nectar points though  and the voucher offering more if you send her back:eek:

Viton seals are suitable for use with unstable biodiesel (also referred to as acidic as it oxidizes)

The resistance of nitrile rubber seals all depends on the ACN rating of the rubber used in the seal. Unfortunately I suspect this will be quite difficult to ascertain as it will only be spec'd on the manufacturers drg.

Ive been chucking straight veg in my l200 for ages, and a vauxhall combo van i had ran on straight veg oil all the time, no petrol or diesel or whatever.. and never gave a peep of any probs.

I only ever add petrol during cold times (like now) becuase I find the oil on it's own is too thick on cold mornings

Mine took a bit longer to start than normal this morning so ive just put a bit of diesel in to lessen the viscosity, see how we go in the morning

Can't comment about today as I'm in the BMW as the Rangie is in the drive with an EAS fault

I told the other half above and had a laugh... then she defended her! Claiming that you probably didn't explain and I do that kind of thing all the time!

mine took a bit of cranking this morning... mine doesnt have the glow plugs wired up though!!!!!( previous owner has never bothered installing the wiring!) ..took a bit of cranking on the veggie.. but still after 5 or 6 seconds... BRRRMMMM :)

Anyway, lol, there is still plenty of oil in Asda, im running around 50/50 at the mo and all is ok will probably thin it out as the weather gets colder and stop when we start getting frosts, i thinks thats the general rule on here, but i think some use it all the time if they heat the oil first.

I started using Bio oil in a transit a few years ago, guy was selling it at about 90p a litre at the time and was all legit with a purpose built unit and was selling biodiesel as a straight substitute for diesel,
After about 18 months my diesel pump went, thought this was just bad luck,
so I got a newer transit,
5 months later another diesel pump gone,

Only pump diesel for me now but I do get tempted some times,
Never heard of Black diesel before now, might give that a go but as for veg oil or bio diesel I'm with Gordan
