Are they worth it ?

The wife has always wanted a Freelander as she works as a home help, and a lot of her clients are little old ladies who live in cottages at the end of muddy lanes and such, so her 1991 Rover 827 SLi naturally sometimes gets stuck and I have to go and tow her out.

I was just wondering if they are any good, and what year would be the best to go for ?

Both her and I hate new cars with all electrics and stuff, so although I could afford it, I don't want a really new one. I'd say up to 2006/7 would be the newest I'd buy.

So, any advise ?

Go for the TD4, best engine.. Really depends on your budget and what you want.look for service docs if poss. Check the threads on buying advice and how to check things ie VCU etc.

Td4 for sure.
No smoke on cold startup (not a big problem, but annoying to diagnose).
Full lock forward/reverse should be effortless. Otherwise the 4x4 viscous coupling might need changing (£400).
No warning lights, check downhill assist.

Really, just read the problem threads and you'll see it's a good hardy machine with known quirks.
I am really happy with mine.

Doesn't sound too bad then.

I checked the local paper today and there is a 2001 Freelander TD4 5 Door with 97,000 miles on the clock for £3,500.

It looks in good condition from the picture but they can be deceiving.

I'll give the person a phone and see what he/she says, and ask where it is located.

Thought I'd update this thread.

I phoned up and it is an elderly man selling it as he's given up driving.

He said it has a few months MOT and a years tax, but it is 100 miles away. I've decided to take the risk and go and see it.

I'll have to take my 1989 Chevrolet Carprice (so much for keeping it for special occasions!) because the Peugeot 405 1.9TD has just leaked 60% of its oil all over the road. God knows what the problem is but it isn't the weather neither do I have time to check it over just now. I hope I've still got compression.

Well I said if he could go down to 3 Grand I'd take it.

He thought about it for a while and tried to get me up to £3,200 but eventually gave in.

I'm going out first thing tomorrow to pick it up.

That should get me out of the dog house for a few days at least!
