Got a very annoying vibration on my 200tdi Disco when at any speed over 30mph which gets worse on the overrun or when changing down gear and slowing down , checked all the UJ's , wheel bearings , diff bearings all ok , no warped bits or bumps on tyres , wheels all balanced , vibe seems to be coming from the front end , anyone had similar problem or know what else could be causing this ferkin annoyance . :(

Read that one that is why I checked all the points that the lift could feck up but all seem to be ok funnily enough the vibe is worse when in 4th and 5th gear and when changing between them .

Have a close look at the propshaft UJ yokes. You might see a small shiny patch where they have been touching when heavily loaded (like when in 4th / 5th gear).
If so, then it's time for wide yoke props.

OK update on the bloody annoying vibe , was parked outside front of house tonight and noticed a very suspicious lookin' spot of nice clean oil under the Disco :scratching_chin: (just recently changed the transfer box oil ) crawled under and  what did I see but a VERY wet looking area around the front output shaft flange so checked to see if any sideways play and guess what ? Yup it seems to have quite a bit of movement , gonna have to get her to bits an' replace the bearing and seal me thinks but will check the flange first just incase it is the prob , well I hope it is , will be easier fix . :biggrin1:

Well I may be pointing you in the wrong direction because I really don't know what I am talking about, but I have recently had a situation with my 300Tdi. It started to vibrate violently, so much so that I couldn't drive it. I have a mate that works at the local Landrover dealer that took a look and it appears that its down to the front prop shaft. The shaft apparently is supposed to spin round when engaged, but it also has a telescopic sort of action on one end that allows it to shorten and lengthen slightly to allow for movement of the axle. In my case this telescopic action was completely seized and caused this vibration. He spent a fair old time on it and managed to get it moving again. However, he did say he wasn't sure whether the movement he manged to get out of it would be enough so take it away and try it.

Well this I have done and I am still getting a slight vibration at around 2000 rpm so am now buying a new propshaft from Paddocks and it will be fitted in the next few days. I will let you know the outcome.

The point I was mainly trying to get over is that he managed to stop the car from vibrating violently to just slightly by freeing the end of the shaft, so I have every confidence that replacing the shaft should get rid of the problem all together.

This is very interesting as my 300tdi has developed an annoying vibration on overrun only, under load / cruising its fine, as soon as I dip the clutch on overrun the vibration disappears.

I too have recently noticed a small oil leak from the front output flange of the transfer box, started after I took the flange out to replace a nackered prop stud. Thought it was just a seal problem

Following your investigation I will check for free play in the flange and report back.

God this place is a gold mine of information. :D:D:):)

My 200tdi has a 2" lift and the only problem I had was a vibe at high speed, changed to a double cardon prop (front) and all is well. This is std on many 300tdi's IIRC?

The car does well in competitions as well as regular airport runs.

regards

Dave

This is a common problem I have heard , what happens is when you grease the sliding part of the shaft the grease doesn't go all round the splines just mainly where the grease nipple is , being a tractor driver I have to grease PTO shafts every day and I have ran into this problem before as the PTO shafts like your prop shaft need to slide , best thing to do is periodically unbolt the prop and give the slide splines a good coating of grease also try to keep the inside splines clean too . Here is a tip for you , I bought one of those little wire wheel thingys that fit onto a drill and welded an extra bit of shaft on to it so that I could get things nice and clean inside the shaft after degreasing with Gunk or parafin .

Thanks for the advice mate. As I said I really don't know what I am talking about so I find this forum a real help. I wasn't even aware the prop shaft could be taken apart like you describe. I assumed it would be a sealed unit.
