Yes - 235 is the safe max in my opinion to allow for tyre-flex on hard cornering or a sudden avoiding manouevre.

I've had a lot of work-related experience off-road, and tried various friends and colleagues vehicles with all sorts of different rubber and I'm very happy with what I have now.

I used to swear by Maloja and Semperit - but those brand names have all but gone nowadays - in the UK anyway.

Must stop now - I feel another nostalgia attack coming on. :p

Many thanks. Will go with you on 235 max.

Ok, can I butt in here, seeing as you people are in the know.

At some point I want to change my LR standard 5 spoke 16x7 alloys for the LR standard Sport 9 spoke 17X7. Is this possible and how much hassle is it to do?

I'm guessing a second hand set of those are like rockin horse poo?

eta it's a late X reg ES 5 door.

ta :)

I wouldn't foresee any problems at all with doing that as you would be putting a later wheel on an early car.

Its the other way round that gives hassle. Most 2nd hand wheels tend to come from older cars so they don't have clearance for the bigger brakes fitted on later models.

Just don't try fitting tyres wider or bigger than 235/55 17"

I wish to enter this Q & A session guys.

I have a std 2003 Freelander on 16's
16 Land Rover Freelander Wheel Rim - 72168 [72168] - $225.95 : The Wheel Warehouse Inc., Your Source for Factory Original Rims - Call us at (800)941-6400

Can I then fit 235/60/16 without issues.??.

I am looking for a summer tyre that does not flex quite as much
as the 215/65/16

And if the right 17's come up,
17 Land Rover Freelander Wheel Rim - 72170 [72170] - $189.95 : The Wheel Warehouse Inc., Your Source for Factory Original Rims - Call us at (800)941-6400
or
17 Land Rover Freelander Wheel Rim - 72171 [72171] - $210.95 : The Wheel Warehouse Inc., Your Source for Factory Original Rims - Call us at (800)941-6400

then I will use them to put the summer tyres on 235/55/17
and get some A/T for the 16's,,
what is the best size A/T's to fit to 16's??

No - depending on the tread (especially if it's an A/T type) the edge may well rub against the front strut spring-cup.
AFAIK 225/60/16 either does not exist or is extremely rare, so you're stuck with 215/65 16"

Any decent brand of 235/55 17" will be much less flexible and will give better steering response

I'd be going for the normal 215/65 16" - but there are folks on here who go serious off-road and they will know more than me.

Hope that helps.
