Hello,

I'm looking into buying a used Freelander 2 and my budget is around 7-7.5k - not sure what model to go for as in TD4 S, GS ... Also, any tips on what to look for and what to avoid and where can I get one from? I'm based in Liverpool, but willing to travel where necessary. I'm so glad I found this site as I was actually heading to a few dealers but after reading some reviews from here I narrowly avoided - phewww!!

Any help, or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

This has been covered quite a few times and there are some good threads on here if you have a search.

Don't buy the petrol unless you own a chain of fuel stations.
Check all central locking works.
Check all power windows
Listen for a rumble from the rear if it's a 4x4 (Haldex unit has been known to go about 100,00 miles)
Check it is a 4x4 unless you want 2wd
If it's got Satnav check the unit and auxiliaries.
If you can run to it, get a HSE.

Not sure on the special editions on the fl2. Someone else will give more details.
Mike

The S is spartan and the GS is only slightly better equipped. The HSE adds lots of goodies, which really help when it's time to move it on.
If you specifically want a 2WD version, then you'll be better off buying a Ford Galaxy, on which the FL 2 is based.
Good luck with the search;)

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your speedy response. Lot's of useful stuff to think about. ) I'm kind of excited about finally getting my first Freelander, but it also feels very daunting with some of the horror stories of dealers that I'm going to have to navigate. Like you say, I'm definitely going to do more research on here, so I'll have more of an idea if it is a good deal or not.

Thanks again.

Check for power steering noise as well depending on age of car you're looking at

Other then that normal second hand car checks - all electrics work including rear wiper, Windows/locks etc

Like I said, avoid the "s" version. It has little in the way of toys. It doesn't even get Terrain Response, which is LR trump card. So go for a GS over the S. The GS gets Terrain Response, cruise control, along with auto headlights and wipers. The HSE adds leather seats and sat nav to the GS spec vehicle;)

Thanks for all the advice, hopefully going to check one out over the weekend, although it's only an S! At least I'll have an idea of what I can get for my money, I'm going to try and get to see a few before I buy. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks again,
Mark

If I'm driving along and Mrs Grumpy asks me if I'm going to turn the wipers or the lights on or off - I feel that's a barrier she has crossed and I'll let her know that I'm perfectly capable of driving the car.

If the bloody car decides to actually turned them on or off - then lower spec for me any day of the week!

I've been using auto wipers, auto headlights and auto dipping rear view mirrors for 10 years. Believe me, it stops front seat passenger intervention
I'd love to have those features in my FL1
