Hi, I am new to Series ownership, before my 1979 88" station wagon I had a 90, and we have a Disco II. When I try to fill up my series III (petrol) it will only take £30 of petrol before the fuel comes up through the breather hole and the neck fills up. With £30 of petrol in, the gauge shows 1/3 full. I just can not fill up the tank! I am guessing the breather is clear as fuel comes up through it. The tube with the gauze on is intact. Any ideas would be welcome, cos long journeys are a pain!

did it cross your mind the sender unit is giving the wrong reading, and you tank is full, not sure of how much the petrol tanks hold , i run a diesel and the tank holds approx 10gallon, i assume its the same with petrol, only way to check is remove the sender unit and dip the tank, but please do not smoke over the tank,

any series 3 ive ever seen used to hold roughly £25 with the rate of inflation on fuel tax n such i can imagine it being bout £30 nowadays its yer sender unit that sticks bout a third up or the fuel gauge got damp and the needle wont go higher than a third of a tank

Thanks, understand the point about the sender unit; but the manual says the tank is 10 gallons which would be about 45 litres. That's at least £50 at todays inflated prices...I will have to check the sender I guess. At least I dont smoke.....!

If the gauge is reading wrong you might be filling a half empty tank. You'll only find out if you run it dry.

I second that.
Get a canister, fill it up and go for a ride.
The canister gets you to the next curb 500yards down the road then, where you'll call the AA

how fast are you filling it? I have to fill mine slowly but it will take £44 at which point i stop, no fuel comes up breather and i have a full tank. If i go above that fuel comes out the breather and if i go quickly it goes everywhere

Thanks for your help guys - the idea of trying to fill an already half-full tank due to a faulty sender is a good one! I was using the petrol pump at full speed also. Anyway, I'll get the sender off and have a look. Thanks again!
