Hi Folks Joined the group to get help from the experts.:)

Got a 1.8 freelander 03 reg petrol. Need advice i am getting a lot of noise from the front and rear when driving but nothing when idling have tried jacking whole landy off the ground but no noise at all and only the drivers side wheels front and rear moving. Could this be the ird, vcu, and diff.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, but we need more info. Does it do it on tick over whilst stationary? Does it do it at a certain range of speeds? Whilst breaking? Only in 3rd gear? When going up hills? What noise is it, a ticking, or banging, or clunk when pulling away...

Like Hippo says more info. What state are the tyres in. What mileage is the freelander on. Does the noise change pitch or volume as the speed increases. The more info we get the better.

Hi. There is no noise when idle, When in motion at any speed there is a dull whinning noise it gets louder as you speed up. the tyres are all the same make and all put on at the same time all brand new. this noise happens going forward or reverse.

Hi. the vcu bearings where renewed last year about june as on its mot they told me that they where worn so i renewed them. I have done the test it seemed ok. i was thinking of taking off the front and rear propshafts and seeing i am still getting the noise, as i am hoping it is not the ird asa they are alot of money.

Remove the rear prop, vcu and front prop together. It's easier. Then see if the whine goes away.

Hi.folks removed the vcu and propshafts took it for a 5 mile drive and no noise what so ever now know new vcu and bearing required. Has anyone ever dealt with Bellenginering they are affering vcu for £200 (reconditioned). This seems to be the cheapest. thanks alot.

Yep, I bought a recon VCU from Bell Engineering - Good Service.

The fact that the noise has gone after you removed the prop does not mean that the fault was only the VCU and prop bearings. The front IRD or rear diff may have been causing the noise but they may now be quiet simply because they are not under any load.
I would be inclined the change the relatively cheap prop bearings first and see if your problem goes away.

Hi Folk. Could you tell me if the shaft that runs through the vcu should be able to turn by hand or is this common also since i removed the vcu and shafts the engine managment light has come on.
