A little worried---no drive for a few seconds.

This is a bit long, I apologise...

OK..the heading might sound a little weird, but I was passing through a wash away (wadi) today that wasnt too deep or steep, just a little bouncy. It was of such little consequence that I didnt even select low range. I bounced up out of the wadi without any problems, the front wheels went through another eroded section, and when the back wheels dropped into the rut, the engine just revved, like it was up on stands. I thought that I had become stuck on my towbar (I keep forgetting to remove the tongue) or that it had popped out of drive, but then there was a rattle like an electric saw rattling to a stop on a nail. It sounded like teeth trying to engage. I selected lowrange thinking that maybe I had done a rear coupling and the beast just idled out of the wadi without any worries. An underneath inspection showed no apparent problems. I put it back into high and into drive in the auto box and drove away and havent had any other difficulties on the 100 klm return trip.(including a bit of rock climbing, pics to follow)

This is a S2 V8 Auto, and someone said quite some time ago that this model had electronic centre diff locking and that it had problems in its ability to lock the diff automatically when needed, so i was wondering if that might be the cause, but I have the incident on video (god-awful rattle!!!!) and none of the wheels are turning at all!!!...

Any suggestions that dont involve half a gallon of petrol and a match?
