you may well be a mechanic with forty years which is good but you aint built and repaired as many boxes as me otherwise you wouldnt ask someone to put thicker oil in r380 and would know of clutch fault in lrs

You misunderstand me James, I sugested that the oil the garage drained out may have been gear oil as they said it was lumpy, I never sugested that the box should be refilled with gear oil. :) In fact I said they should have used ATF or MTF. :)

Ahh well, free speech. Awesome! hahaha.. I thought i'd tap in and tell you what the problem was with the Disco. the rattle that was louder than the engine turned out to be clutch related. Not the springs causing gearbox chatter, but the backing plate on the clutch had come loose and was kinda doing its own thing. Woo! No more repair bills! All done on warranty and fingers crossed that their second offering is better. The manufacturer was Valeo. I thought they were pretty good? Live and learn. get on that was made on a wednesday!

Thnks for your posts fellas.. :D

I think James and I will aggree on this one, any garage or mechanic that leaves a clutch cover plate loose should not be working on cars.
Just imagine the consequences of leaving a brake or steering component loose.

Agreed. owever, I dont think the manager conveyed the problem very well. I had a look at it today and if you were to hold the clutch plate on the splines and hold the outter edge of it. it rotates a few degrees. The rivets that hold the spline drive to the friction plate had come loose somehow. However all sorted!! It made a noise exactly like gearbox chatter but really loud, like more so than the engine, but disapears with revs and gone over 1500ish. I hope this helps if any one else gets a rattle and wonders what it may be. Especially if its a new clutch! it took less than 8 miles for it to sound proper bad when left on tick over and standing a few feet away.

All sorted though, another new clutch in and 1 less job to do on the van. Any one good at doing sills? lol..

O.

thats quite rare but it is the same symptoms you get with some h/d clutch plates now and as was before clutch plates where modified it does sound like gear box fault, and was considered so for a while

Yeah they did replace for free. Even gave me a old but mint van to use for work for a couple of days! Tidy! A few days in and it feels and sounds all good again. Cant fault it. Now for some welding....
