Ive got a 4.6 hse at the moment and ive lost compression on one cylinder. Im gonna strip the heads off and see whats up i.e head gasket, liner etc. If its terminal i.e liner dropped/cracked then i was thinking of putting a 300TDI in it? Im not a fan of the bmw lump and wondered if this would be possible? Anyone know if it would match up to my auto box of not? I know the Tdi lump is lower on power etc but i do quite like the engine and would rather use it than the bmw lump. Any help on this would be appreciated cheers:)

Sounds like a hellava job to me. The 300 tdi was mated to the ZF auto box in the late Classic and the Discovery, so that part wont be a problem. However getting the BECM to play ball will be an issue. Engine mounts are easy to fabricate so again no problem. If you did get it to work it would be very slow and you may have to look at the gearing. In all would be cheaper to fix your V8 with a short engine if it crook.

Well looks like good news? i stripped the heads off quick this afternoon to see ahat had happened. As i thought it has blown the side out of the gasket on one cylinder. Its the third cyl back on the left hand bank. I had had a ticking/chuffing noise which was slowly getting worse until i finally had a bad missfire. The ticking was now obviously the gasket letting go. Any known reasons for this to happen ? or just one of those things. Liners all appear to be good with no cracks or signs of dropping. Could it have run lean? i also do run on gas? The car never overheated at all on me but not sure if it did with the previous owner?

Well chaps im still thinking of this conversion. Ive been looking into tuning the 300 tdi lump and it seems as tho reasonable power is easily achievable for peanuts? Now will the engine go straight onto my auto box as stated above? Now the becm part is a slight concern, would i just not be able to do away with it all together? The plan will be to run a large front mount intercooler, run 1 bar of boost at the manifold and adjust the fueling accordingly. This should see a figure of 150bhp so ive been informed? A friend of mine has a friend with these mods on a disco and he says it flys! weight wise my RR is approx 100kg heavier so not a massive amount. Any info or any problems you may all see would be appreciated.
cheers

I'd just keep thinking if I were you - it ud be easier in the long run....

i wouldnt bother with the 300 idea either.
i sold my 300tdi disco 3 weeks ago, that was modified.
allisport intercooler/silicone hoses/k&N filter/de-cat/EGR removed/pump tweeked.the 300 runs 1 bar boost std and i never touched the boost side of things..yes it was quick at pull off with all that on..BUT all that cost a few quid too and my p38 dse is quicker overall and pulls better and more economical..just my 2 pennies worth ;)

Cheers for ya response mate, i realise the 300 runs a bar std but i was gonna take the actuator feed and move it to the manifold so as im actually getting a bar at the manifold and not suffering any loss through the larger intercooler and pipe run. The mods in all honestly arent gonna cost me much at all as 1, ill be doing it all myself and 2, ive got intercoolers etc already as im into turbo charged petrol engines and have all sorts. The main reason for choosing the 300 is that i do like this engine and im not a great fan of the bmw lump just my opinion. I did see there is a VNT turbo conversion available for it too? This is something i could look into awell as this will increase the low down torque (ive actually tried these on a petrol engine and what i difference!) I appreciate that i could sell up and buya diesel but as ive said not a fan of dse lump plus im happy with my P38 and i know what i have i could end up buying another and hav all sorts of troubles? Im not a straight forward sort of person and like a challenge but i do need to feel in my mind that its possible and worth doing.:)

i know what you mean lol i like me turbo petrol engines too, i had untill october 2008 an original ROUSE SPORT 304-R cosworth built by-obviously ANDY ROUSE-4 x BTTC IT WAS APROX 1 of only 25 left today out of around 67 in total sold..was in RSOC with it and was my pride and joy but the way work is at the mo my toy had to go 1st :(
as for the 300 engine it also suffers with HD gasket failure and known for the heads cracking too but it was a good lump and kept going, but i would personally have me bmw lump any day as ive owned both to compare ;)

I am thinking of putting a 300 tdi and manual box in a P38 from a too far gone classic Range Rover.

I dont need the car but I thought I would see how it went I have two V8 P38
One auto biog and an HSE in the Yard

I will get them on the Ramps And have a look.

I would do away with most of the Electronics as the TDI is Pre ECU.
If I do it I will post the work and photos.

Father in law has a P38 4.0 V8 converted to a 300TDi and to be honest it pulls like a train.

IIRC the front part of the exhaust is 300tdi and then mated to the orginal V8 exhaust, couple of cooling hoses changed and mated to 4.0 radiator again IIRC.

Think it is mated to the original Disco gear box.

Car also runs on coils and sits about an inch higher than my 4.0 P38.

Everything works as it should, ie transfer bbox

Its a great conversion and something I am tempted to do when the inevitable happens and the V8 goes pop.

It was converted by a garage over in the lake district about 4 years ago and causes no problems unlike mine
