My 2003 td5 with 102k on the clock has started to intermittently light up the 3 amigos. I can drive around for a bit like today and they never came on whereas a few days ago they came on 3 times in 1 day over a short period. They will then go out when I switch off the engine. First question , can I continue driving safely (is ABS and TCS passivated, and I just have basic braking) ??

I have changed out the arb's during a de-ace some time ago and more recently changed the front brakes and disks and also the front four ball joints and bars and don't remember doing any damage or anything wrong. I also repaired the starter motor last week with a new solenoid repair kit . So just wondering if any of the above work could have caused this problem. I've read many threads over the past few days and all suggest either the ABS sensors or Hubs or Modulator valves or indeed the Sensor wiring or dirt could be the problem.I also read its a good idea to do a hill decent occasionally to get the valves working which I did today so will wait and see how that turns out.

I would also like to know is there anyway I can get the codes without having to buy a Hawkeye or Nanocom or going to my local L.R. Dealer.(not in the budget right now) .i.e. would one of those cheaper OBD readers you see advertised for about £30 do the trick. Any help welcome as I hope to do a trip over the Christmas Holiday period and would like to get it sorted..

most likely wheel bearing but worth getting hawkeye and checking as it will save you money in long run,but even with lights on brakes will work if not with abs

U might have a chance to read ABS codes with generic reader if yours is the facelift modell... i didnt try that myself but worth a try if u can do that without spending big money. It's quite common to have 3 amigos after the sensors were removed/refitted for some reson. I had the same issue after i replaced the CV joints. It's very important to make sure that the sensor sits perfect in its place. Even some microns or a speck can disturb the senosor. In 90% of cases when the 3 amigos are intermittent, caused by an "air gap....." of a not perfectly fitted sensor the ABS function will not be affected. U can try to remove and refit again the sensors after u clean well the sensor and the area, tap gently the sensor back into it's place and tighten well the retaining screw. See this www.discovery2.co.uk/ Nanocom Locator, get help from your Land Rover Buddies!!! maybe u have some business in Fermanagh or somewhere from that list in the near future;)

Thanks Sierrafery, but I didn't remove any of the sensors but was working quite close doing the disk&break changes . I will check out for dirt and debris though...And great info on the Nanocom Locator as we have a cottage not too far from Fermanagh. I'll be taking a trip up there soon so will probably mail the guy in advance and bring him a nice bottle of wine. If you could just briefly explain the wiring modification that some people are doing mentioned in the various threads (ON THE 3 AMIGOS). Are you in effect turning off the lights for good. If so would you risk losing your ABS

That wiring mod is just for the SVS(shuttle valve switch) related 3 amigos. It doesnt have effect on other faults... but is a good mod here u have it ABS Mod - LAND ROVER CLUB V.I.

If u have time and patience u can study about the 3 amigos most common occurance by opening these links:
