I would guess a pulsed output, with each pulse causing the coil to fire.

The little 8 pointed star wheel on the dizzy shaft should trigger a pick up unit, which then fires the coil.

As you have a remote amplifier disconnecting the lead from amplifier should leave you with the sensor.
A mili volt or frequency check while cranking should give an indication of switching (bit like how you would check an ABS sensor)

When you have satisfied yourselves there is are pulses then amplifier next port of call, as long as wiring isn't damaged check continuity with wiring disconnected and it has not shorted across

[SIZE=-1]FIELD EFFECT TRANSISTORS

ae430d.gif
A field effect transistor has only two layers of semiconductor material, one on top of the other. Electricity flows through one of the layers, called the channel. A voltage connected to the other layer, called the gate, interferes with the current flowing in the channel. Thus, the voltage connected to the gate controls the strength of the current in the channel. There are two basic varieties of field effect transistors-the junction field effect transistor(JFET) and the metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET). Most of the transistors contained in today's integrated circuits are MOSFETS's.

Took the coil/ignition module off under cover of darkness tonight, reckon there's a good chance that there has been water ingress in the module and the link lead had chafed through exposing the wire so it may have shorted out too, bugger......
DV, regarding that link on eBay you sent. I have contacted the vendor asking for a buy it now, if he agrees then hopefully Drewster will pick it up whilst on his travels tomorrow;)

Woohoo! :D:D:D:D
I got that V8 growl again! :D:D:D:D
New/secondhand ignition module and link lead fitted and it fired straight up.
Thankyou for the pointers and advice Fanatic and thankyou to Drewster for picking up the part for me :)
Think I shall make up a spare, just in case ;)
