My Defender 90s' clutch pedal will not move more than 1/2". I was driving along, tried to change gear and whilst the pedal went to the floor the engine noise was as though I hadn't touched the clutch at all. I tried to press the clutch again and it wouldn't move - still won't!

I bought the landy last month and was told that it had been fitted with a new clutch (it's done 3000 miles since).

Any suggestions on where to start looking for a fault?

Check the fluid level and get the system bled, proffessionally if you are at all unsure of what you're doing. Then take it from there...

check your clutch resivour fluids. if the fluids are up to level, then the rubber seal is not doing it's job.

you mentioned that you could press the clutch pedal to the floor without much resistance, so that should point you to the clutch master pump.

when driving and you really need to change gears, pump the clutch a few times to get the fluid moving.

had this problem on my SIII once and the clutch fluid was leaking down into the footwell. this indicates the master pump needs immediate attention.

also had this problem on my Td5 once after applying a repair kit on the master pump. sometimes randomly, no pressure when i press the clutch pedal. No leaks though, so it's the rubber seals.

Thanks for the advice - the hydraulics were all ok - I ended up taking the gearbox off and finding that the release arm pivot had punched its way through the release arm.

A new release arm has been fitted (together with a slave cylinder for good measure!) and everything now works. - It cost less than £30 for the bits, but took me and a mate 3 nights to fix!
