200Tdi 1990 G Reg
Had my 90 nearly 2 years now and although the engines never really let me down its not the fastest. It seems ok on the straight but hopeless on hills.
When I first got it it was a bit faster then it is now but it threw loads of black smoke out, took it to a local diesel specialist and he said someone had really mest about with the pump so he put it back to normal the best he could. does not smoke now half as much then it did.
Reason I'm asking is I had a drive of a mates 200tdi and his is much more faster then mine.
Had a couple of loose injectors and was loosing a little diesel but tightened them all up with new washers and no more leeks now, it does not loose a drop of oil or water either. just been serviced last week too.
Is there anything else I can do to get more power ? apart from tweaking the pump again??

when you say it was serviced what was covered? only reason i ask is my 200tdi s3 sometimes gets slower and usually responds well to a fuel filter change and an adjust of the tappets, and as saint says worth checking you are getting correct boost too

All filters and new oil, had made a little difference but sill not much power on the hills, would adjusting the tappets make a big difference? as have not done them, not sure if they have ever been done.
Also how do I check boost??

Go for it, if you are not sure the tappets are not right, then set them and see what you got, it is a simple thing to check and set.
For boost you will need a guage.

Cheers

Tappet clearence will allow the fuel air mixture to enter and exhaust to exit more efficently.....due to the valves opening on time and faster...so they can make quite a difference.

Usual way is to tee into the boost compensator pipe that lead sto the FIP....add a pressure gauge....more than likely the boost is around 15-17 psi - a tad over 1 bar....so the gauge doesn't have to be massive.

especially worth a go if you dont think they have been done, all the little things on older vehicles make an over all difference they are not like modern engines that perform from the off untill they die all together, the old girls need fettling lol

Thanks for advice, will defiantly have a go at the tappets, will also change seals etc when I'm in here, I'm sure ive seen a full seal kit for rocker cover somewhere.

any motor factor will have a rocker gasket they are ten a penny on ebay too, worth putting a bit of something to hold gasket into rocker when replacing it as it can be a bit fiddly, not silicone though, for EG use a RTV sealant- something oil resistant

Good point, I checked mine and then found the gasket had not sealed correctly, LOL, lots of oil from the rocker cover.

I would be more inclined to believe that the pump hasn't been set up correctly or you have a leak on the inlet or something along those lines.

they do anyway ive changed mine 2/3 times in time of ownership and it still leaks, as far as im aware its part of the land rover auto chassis lubrication system

fair point, i had to readjust my pump timing not so long ago, it had slipped a good two teeth, symptoms were it was hard to start and it was breathless when driving

What else will I need?? I'm sure Ive seen a full kit somewhere with the half moon seals and washers for rocker cover.
Or maybe order them separate.

Tappets would certainly be a good shout on anything that age. People never seem to check them although they are a service interval check. Think it might be 12,000 mile check, bet there are some around havent been done for 120k!
Fuel injector service is another thing often neglected on old diesels. Doing the tappets is virtually free, though.

For the Rocker Cover...thats it....2 half moons, 3 bolt gromets and the cover seal.....

As for injectors....you can get replacement nozzles, you have to take the injector apart for that which can be a bit of bitttch as they can be tight to undo....also they have springs and things in them, there is a write up on here from a while agao about someone who replaced there injector nozzles.....speaking of which I have a set of nozzles on my desk at work I bought for our 200Tdi....but we are looking to sell her now and she runs a dream in any case so never changed them.....

Let me know if you want them, just bung a Tenner in a charity box of your choice and you can have them gratis (aside from the charitable donation that is).

They can be rebuilt. First they are tested on a pop tester. If the pressure and spray form is ok, they go back in. costs about tenner each, or free if you know someone with a hand test rig.

They can be rebuilt if no good, new nozzles, pintle valves, springs, washers and tops. Parts and assembly about fifty quid each for mine, seventy five quid for yours, from a fuel injection specialist. You might get cheaper of the net, but beware of poor quality work. Diesel Bob is sposed be ok, not dealt with him myself.
