Evening all
This is not for me but a friend - who after seeing my L322, ditched his P38 and bought a L322 (he got it cheap £4800) so had an inkling that there may have been something not quite right... he test drove it had a mechanic give it the once over and all seemed ok.

Anyway hes only had it a week, and the gearbox keeps slipping (no power on kickdown) and now and again goes into limp mode. engine off and back on and all is fine. He has been told that its the TC, thats gone and that this would cause bits to enter the gearbox so has been advised to get TC and gearbox replaced.. I thought the TC was only an issue on the TDV6 variant??

Anyone else had any experience with this issue, and can anyone offer any advise, and maybe a guide line on cost?

Cheers
Rich

The V8 does not use the GM gearbox which was the one with torque convertor problems. Nor sure exactly which box it has but 2002 it is possibly the ZF6HP which should be OK. First step read fault codes, then if no fault codes check & change the oil & filter and add some snake oil (Lucas Transmission Fix) and see what happens. Worth a punt, a gearbox is going to cost almost as much as was paid for the car.

2002 - 2005(6) uses the ZF5HP24.....

That will be the zf5hp24 in there. They do have a known issue with the torque converter. Catch them early and you can get away with just the TC, but if it has started to break down then a box rebuild is recommended. My local auto trans man had three l322 on the lifts when I booked mine in, all the same problem tc failure. Sounds like you have been given some sound advice.

What are the symptoms of TC breakdown??

Symptoms - hunting at steady speed usually about 40 - 50 mph as the tc goes in and out of lock. Juddering from low speed pick up. If you have either of these symptoms and switching into sport mode fixes it then it's fair to assume the tc is on its way out.

He had it scanned today and it appears to be a switch of some sort. Could be the inhibitor switch is my guess?

The Inhibitor switch is used to tell the ECU which position the Selector is in and also to inhibit the start pocedure outside of N or P....

I don't know Auto boxes to well (JamesMartin or Beemble are your men for that) - but I am not sure how failure of the inhibit switch would cause transmission slip....

Hmmm prob not that then. But the scan did show an electrical switch fault. I'll keep you posted.

Yeah. It's not mine it's a mate. He bought it cheap £4860 so had an inkling something was a miss... Still if it costs him £2k it still stands him at market value and he has peace of mind its done.

Mine is just on 90k now... Just hoping mine is one of the good ones :-/

There's oakdene in colwick that recon boxes
and there was a place in cotgrave I used once
