i have a problem that has just started on my defender 200tdi... I turn the key to start the engine and all I get is clicking... but nothing ... turn it on and off a couple of times and it starts up... checked and cleaned earths... lights dim when I turn the key... so powers getting to the starter... batterys only 10 months old.. unless its a dud any one got a idea b 4 i fork out for a new starter motor or solenoid...thanks

Check connections on battery and battery isolator if fitted

Try pushing ignition key inwards whilst cranking(mine does that)

As above mine does that, take all connections of starter and clean well and reattach making sure all connections are tight fitting, also another test for batt is put multimeter on battery and crank over, if volt drops to around 9v when cranking battery is fubared.

I'd start with checking battery voltage. Below 12v is flat. When cranking a diesel can drop to 9v. Below either of these you have either a battery or wiring prob. I'd then volt drop test the engine earth with a voltmeter and the main live to check all the main cabling! Then you can test the solenoid etc to identify any probs there by volt drop test again!!
Or next time hit it with a hammer if it makes it go it's the starter ;)

Took nearly two months for the mud in mine to finally make it breakdown! It was cranking slow for a couple of weeks the just packed up! Stripped cleaned ok till next time;)

clicked 3 times then Started straght up 15 times in a row its playing mind games with me going to get some new earth straps 2 moz don't think its starter so must b a bad earth

Must be! ;) do a volt drop test on the earth!
Get a multimeter. Set to dc volts. Connect one end to the engine block somewhere nice and clean. Tother end to negative batt term. Get someone to crank it! When it's ****ing around, you'll expect to see voltage if you have a bad earth cos it'll go thru the meter instead of the cable cos it's easier! You don't really want to see more than 1v on a starter circuit, much more than that you have a bad earth!
OR
Simple test, get one jump lead, conect to engine block and to batt neg. if it fixes it, it's your earth;)
