Hi,

Before this there was a quiet clucking/clanking sound every time I depressed the accelerator just started in the last couple of weeks.. then tonight after turning at a junction heard something drop and then no drive at all.. This car was bought with the propshaft removed I've driven it 20,000 miles since then. Got a whole list of other repairs I've had done, cam belt, tensioner, fan belt twice, new exhaust the list goes on.. It also would make a creaking sound on the front drive every time I took it round very steep cream cracker corners.. is this the cv joint or the ird.. driveshaft? or is it just shafted.. 140,000 on the clock.. should I bother with the cost of the repairs for this one. if it is and IRD maybe source a breakers spare?

oh gearbox don't think I wanted to hear that.. and I'd just bought a smilie air freshner :) looked good with the cherry red body

this always happens around winter whilst on holiday with a couple of days left to get back to work

Check driveshaft hasn't popped out. If not more than likely the diff in the gearbox, splines shear off it sending drive to rear wheels only. Less likely but possible are the 2 small gears you can see through the fill plug of the ird, these brake up, usually when other bits of ird are floating around inside. If its this then ird is total scrap, it can't even be rebuilt

Another thing I forgot to mention is the gears dont engage.. meaning I can basically put the gear leaver into any gear without pressing the clutch.. apart from reverse which just crunches..
Also, if I rev its as if the car is still in gear the speedo reads the speed rising as I rev.

Whilst I was towed I was rolling (this may have done more damage?) the sound wasn't of a car just rolling.. there was a constant whirring sound underneath on the wheels.. I did some tests whilst towed I would press and depress the clutch and I would just hear a slight change in the tone of the whirring rolling sound..

update on this,, its been jacked up both front wheel move freely as in one wheel can be turned clockwise and the other wheel doesnt move anti clockwise.. suspected diff? driveshaft and joints all ok and clutch

Does this mean then that its now the gearbox or ird? its going to be stripped down for further confirmation

great just what i needed for the new year happy new year everyone :D

Gearbox fault

You're right! it was one of the splines going into the gearbox there was on the drive there..
Anyway, have an excellent mechanic sorting it out.. he's sourced a gearbox and hes also doing the clutch too since its all stripped down may aswell as there was a lot of play in it.. I'm also getting him to de cat it.. :D

IRD failure or gear box input shaft splines rounded off :(

tbh the gearbox splines would be the easiest and cheapest to sort.
the IRD on the other hand

Glad it was the least painful problem :)
