Hi!

I have an old 19J which I have been throwing money at recently and appears to be struggling on for now. (Heads off for refacing at the mo).

But... I know someday, possibly soon it will finally give up or I'll give up on it. So, I know Glenkoyne quote about £1500 to do the lot and supply the engine etc but they are a bit far away and wondered if that was expensive or not? I could prob do the job myself but knowing me it would take me a month of sundays. (Well, it actually would!).

Can you good blokes suggest any where and possibly cheaper? I'm in Bournemouth, Dorset.

Thanks!! :blabla:

thats expensive source yourself a decent 200 tdi for around £300 buy a exhaust conversion kit fit a new clutch while your there should cost you no more than around £600 so a good saving to be made if you fit it yourself

It's actually a very labour intensive job the money wont be in the parts its the 20ish hours of labour that will be put into it by the time youve had the engine pulled out swapped a few bits refitted it and then tested it all

I been thinking of using glencoyne myself I just cant be arsed doing it outside on the drive in the rain and im working 7 days a week anyway so will never get round to doing it.

yeah, but it will take you 2 months!

Nope 26 hours to remove 19J, strip crank out, rebuild a 200Tdi from a pile of bits and get it back into the engine bay hooked upto the gearbox ;)

May have taken a few more days after that fannying around to get her running, but that was waiting on parts ;)

so thinking about it then if it takes most pepes 24/26 hrs to do
times that by a garages hourly rate of between £30/£50 hr
and then the cost of the engine aswell suddenly £1500 all in dont seem to bad

as has been said they will have to guarantee it and its upto them to iron out any teething problems and get it running

was only teasing Paul, think you did a grand job.;)

Thing is it's not a difficult job but it is time consuming. If you have to do it on your drive in between other commitments it could take longer than you think. There's always some unexpected problem which will result in a trip to somewhere to fetch something or time spent repairing or refurbing parts that you didn't budget for. If you've got to put all your tools etc away when this happens the overall timescale starts to stretch out an before you know it the wife's on your back, the neighbours are complainin, etc, etc.
1500 quid, take it to the garage, pick it up in a few days, all sorted, seems good to me.

This is true, with your own swap it's down to you worrying about the after effects of teething problems etc, with a customer it has to be right and you have to accept you may get it back in a week or so to sort out bits n bobs.

Cheers :) It was a pure learning curve but at times the smallest bit caused the longest wait

Again true, with a garage guaranteeing the result you can rest knowing that any small issues with the replacement engine will be sorted by the garage. On the flip side you have know that the garage has sourced a good engine to start with, and that it may not turn out to be as good as you both thought...

Most garages will be unwilling to fit an engine that they havent seen running or atleast given a once over. Its their reputation after all and no one wants a ****ed off landy owner in thier office putting off other customers!

Took me 2 days to do 19J to 300tdi. Why bother with a 200tdi when u can have a 300tdi.
They are newer more refined, more than likely to have less miles

Thanks all. Labour intensive I know, and I don't want to do it on the driver either!!

Andy, thanks. It was/is a semi hyperthetical question but would still like to know what you'd charge. I put the old 19j back together this morning and the bloody thing still smokes and leaks oil!!!

The bores seem okay (new pistons and rings before christmas), I have refaced the cylinder head and got new valve guides fitted but still it smokes and worse chucks out the oil onto the drive.

Anyone want to buy a project.. I've had enough of this one!

yes... and... they suffer from P gasket leaking, seized water pumps, alternator sits lower (more prone to get coated in water and mud) and they will not resist as much as a 200 in case of overheating.
