Not saying it is the thrust bearing, but it's the most likely thing to make a whirring noise when you press the clutch !!!! :)

It's part of the clutch assembly between the engine and gearbox, so the gearbox has to be split from the engine. Plus you wouldn't really change just the thrust bearing, it's better to replace the entire assembly that being the thrust bearing, clutch plate and pressure plate, false economy...

Is there a missing picture that should be between 1 & 2?? I want to see the bit after you're quite clearly indicating left and about to go up that banking?? :)

The bottle you're looking at next to the dipstick (if it's the one with a large nut shape on top) is the oil filter housing. I'd imagine a whirring sound when you depress the clutch to be the thrust bearing. It isn't near the dipstick mind!

Well finally got around to changing the wheels and throwing some 30mm spacers on just for good measure. Freelander came with 225/55/17 on alloys which is pretty much the standard. Managed to get five 15" steels off Ebay and have had them powder coated. Tyres are Maxxis All Terrain at 225/70/15...
