Hi all i am new to the site and can anyone help me please. i have a freelander 2004 td4 and have developed a whirring sound which is in time with the engine speed. It is louder when i depress the clutch pedal and can hear it clearly inside the car. Have lifted bonnet and can hardly hear it but have identified it to be at the front of the engine close to the dipstick. Also what is the bottle for nrxt to the dipstick.

The bottle you're looking at next to the dipstick (if it's the one with a large nut shape on top) is the oil filter housing. I'd imagine a whirring sound when you depress the clutch to be the thrust bearing. It isn't near the dipstick mind!

thank you for your help is the thrust bearing an expensive job to do

It's part of the clutch assembly between the engine and gearbox, so the gearbox has to be split from the engine. Plus you wouldn't really change just the thrust bearing, it's better to replace the entire assembly that being the thrust bearing, clutch plate and pressure plate, false economy otherwise. ;)

Not saying it is the thrust bearing, but it's the most likely thing to make a whirring noise when you press the clutch !!!! :)
