    Sad Defender News

I'm sure Land Rover could scout around for a Puma replacement, it's not as if diesel vehicles are going to be outlawed (I hope!). You stop making something when the market disappears or it becomes illegal or unprofitable. I suspect crash legislation is the problem: Defenders don't really have...

    300tdi temp problems/water not heating

Basic physics: Heat = Work The more work the car does, the more heat it generates. Diesel engines generate less heat for the useful work they do but they still generate it in proportion to the workload. That heat MUST go somewhere. If you're cruising at 60mph (legal max. with a trailer) with...

What have you done to your Landie today.

Ordered a replacement timing cover 'cos when they changed the cambelt there was hardly anything to bolt the fan pulley back on to

Been there, done that (approximately). Looks like I'm the only one in the county though

    Change of number plates

Stick the new ones on top of the old. Worked for me when I failed an MOT with a cracked plate (and didn't want to pull half the back off the Citroen by removing the plate).

What have you done to your Landie today.

Booked the Disco in for a cambelt change. Got my friendly neighbourhood welder to agree to stitch the bodyshell back together. (Rot goes up into C-post on one side so I suspect he's going to be taking plenty of beer tokens off me).

Hello everyone! What's going on with my alarm?

I bow to others' wisdom. Just ask my neighbours about the fob on an early 300 not working ... Tip: if the light under the radio's still flashing, don't open the door! Does the central unlocking undo when you turn the key?

Hello everyone! What's going on with my alarm?

According to the handbook (RTFM !), once the alarm's been set with the fob it must be unset by the fob. No amount of key work will reset it. There are links in other threads on here to replacement fob suppliers but the owner should have given you the fob in the first place. I'd give them a ring...

Ah yes, that might make sense - wedges behind the adjuster to match the wedges on the front side. Cheers!

Stripped the handbrake off :) Realised I've ordered the wrong oil seal for the transfer box :o Wondered what the wedge-shaped bits are that fell off the handbrake

    4x4 selection

Don't use the difflock on tarmac. Not for anything more than a few yards in a straight line anyway otherwise you'll do all sorts of nasty things to your transmission. If you get off the mud onto tarmac and the difflock light won't go out when you shift back to the right, put the steering on...

Not sure about the salad diet - too skinny and you fall through the middle when the diaphragm goes. I prefer to play it safe.

    new hand brake shoe set

Thanks all - particularly BustersBus for the excellent post. Waiting on the correct seal for the transfer box (the one I ordered is 3mm too wide to get in the hole) I noticed two extra pieces had fallen out of the handbrake assembly. They're not in BusterBus's pictures so I guess they're...

oil round back of rear prop shaft

Oil or grease? By the flange or further up? Has your can of 10W40 fallen over and dripped through the boot floor? (Mine did :o ) Anything else plastered with gloop? Does it still drive without the difflock engaged ??

2nd Row Seats, MOT Fail, Wont Lock Back

Same problem with a Disco1. Not been MOT'd while I've had it (yet) though. Catch seems to lock when using a screwdriver to substitute for the pin so I'm going to spend a little time seeing if anything can be adjusted. Otherwise it'll be MOt'd as a 2 seater (thanks to GreenHornet for the tip).

    !

When I bought mine, the vendor said "alarm works on the key but not on the fob". Swapped in a new battery and - hey presto! - armed the alarm with the fob. Went to bed feeling rather smug. Following morning, it took two of us half an hour to get the immobiliser deactivated (after I stopped it...

    Back to the fold

Hi all. Having seen the error of my ways (I was a J**p owner for a while) I've returned to the Solihull stable replacing the C******e with an early 300TDi Disco. I'm hoping it'll be less troublesome than my SIII was. It needs some TLC (not surprising, given the price) but this forum had...
