Hi Everyone,

Having fallen in love with our friend's Defender (my fiancee and I borrowed it while house-sitting for them), this week I have just purchased my first Land Rover. A Discovery in actual fact, and very pleased I am too!! :D

One small problem though - sometimes when I unlock it (with the key), the alarm (horn) starts sounding. The Disco didn't come with a 'blipper' when I bought it - just a key. It has interior sensors up near the interior light so perhaps it should have a remote blipper? ...perhaps this is the problem?

I was wondering if this is a problem that any of you know about?

It's a 1994 Disco 2.5 diesel.

Cheers,

Richard

According to the handbook (RTFM !), once the alarm's been set with the fob it must be unset by the fob. No amount of key work will reset it.

There are links in other threads on here to replacement fob suppliers but the owner should have given you the fob in the first place. I'd give them a ring if I were you.

There is a simple fix for this but I doubt if any one is going to be keen on telling a 2 post Noob how to steal a disco, sorry mate.

Wrong system, the OP must have a single button fob system, therefore the fob is an option, unlike the two button system.

Perhaps you a bit to quick in turning the key, the lock also operates a micro switch which may not be operating fully sometimes ie. sticking.
There two switches, alarm and central locking.

And :welcome2: to the Forum.

Thank you for the advice everyone.

KeepDigging - I am a firm believer in RTFM and have read it from cover to cover. Unfortunately, this hasn't told me whether it came with a key fob. The chap I bought it off said that he didn't know and that it didn't come with a key fob when he bought it.

Livers - It's good to hear that the forums are security conscious. Having bought the LR, maybe it's a bit like "Jedi you are, but learn you must". I trust that in time, I shall aquire the esoteric knowledge of which you speak.

Discool - Thank you for the advice; you could well be on to something there! It is an intermittent fault, so yes perhaps it is triggered by me turning the key too quickly. I'll try turning it more slowly and see if that stops it happening. Thanks for the welcome mate :)

I bow to others' wisdom.

Just ask my neighbours about the fob on an early 300 not working ...

Tip: if the light under the radio's still flashing, don't open the door!

Does the central unlocking undo when you turn the key?

Thanks for reply KD - Yes the central locking undoes when I turn the key... and sometimes (maybe once every 3 or 4 'opens') the alarm sounds.

To clarify, the alarm is sounding the second that I unlock the car. It isn't going off when I open the door, it goes off simultaneously with turning the key.

UPDATE:

Still no idea what the problem is BUT I do now know how to lock the car without setting the alarm :D. So, now more annoyed neighbours :5brant:

Thanks for the help everyone :)

That is because the alarm is voltage sensing, when the CL activates the battery voltage drops therefore the alarm sounds. Simples :)

Ahhh, I see - yes that makes sense discool, thanks. I had thought that there would be a mechanical door sensor of somekind that registered the physical unlocking. So when I'm tuning the key I'm triggering the microswitch for the central locking but not the microswitch for the alarm, so the voltage drops and my neightbours get annoyed.

Yes that makes sense, thanks. So I probably need to buy one of these: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/ring-micro-switch-188186.html

If your still have an issue you need to remove the door card and get access to the to the switches to understand how the are fitted and work in relation to the lock barrel.

Because of the cam arrangement the alarm is unset first and then the CL operates, but it seems as just one function when turning the key in the lock as it should do..

Are u turning the key fully in the unlock direction, as I think it must be something simple. :)

Of course u could get a single button fob of the same frequency to use, they are user programmable, then u can lock and unlock remotely, no need to use a key.

Hi discool - Yes, the problem is still there, althought I now know how to lock the Disco without alarming it so now it's much better, however I would obviously rather have the problem sorted!

I have tried various different ways of opening the car but there doesn't seem to be any correlation between 'turning technique' (including turning it all the way) and whether the alarm triggers.

Taking the door card off sounds like a good idea, could a good blast of WD40 on the switches free it up perhaps?

My initial thought was that I would get a keyfob, on the basis that even if the key problem still exists it would seldom affect me anyway (and there is obviously a benefit with being able to remote unlock too). However, when I investigated online it seemed as though it would need to be programmed by LR at some expense, and in all honesty, I'm a bit skint at present :(

Nope, single button fobs are as already stated "user programmable" the two button fobs are not.

Hi discool; that sounds like really good advice. I'm going to look for a single-button programmable remote. I really appreciate all the help :)

Once I've got the alarm thing sorted I'm going to try and sort the sound out. I love music and in the Disco I've bought the rear speakers have been removed, as have the 'sub' speaker in the real door, so all I have is the two fronts. No bass at all!

Lots of info on fitting replacement head units, loudspeakers and how to reconnect the door sub to the head unit if you use the forums search facility :)

The frequency for the remote must match the ecu which is underneath by the glove box, the ecu has a tv style coax plug in the front of it along with the part number/frequency label, or it should have..........
