    European Trip - Spares?

We moved to France ten years ago, haven't regretted it for a minute. We're planning to settle in Switzerland now.

    Manual Vs Auto

Even in high range? That's not normal for an Auto. I think the 'box in my D2 is the same as the one in the D1, and it doesn't behave like that - except in Low Range with the Manual mode selected.

    Manual Vs Auto

I think he means using the numbers in High Range to limit the highest gear, or in Low Range (at least in my D2) pressing the Mode button turns the Auto into a Manual, and selecting the number puts you in that exact gear, without any shifts up or down.

    Towing 3.5 Tons?

You should be OK with your licence - I got mine in '89 and I have B+E. And yes, the Land Rover is perfectly capable of doing what you want :)

    European Trip - Spares?

As a comparison, I work in southern Switzerland and have a house in Western France, about 700 miles (or 10 hours) away. When I drive that in my Disco 2 I wouldn't think of packing any spares.

    European Trip - Spares?

The whole question does sound a bit like a discussion from the '70s... Is the OP going to be packing some "proper tea" and salt 'n' shake crisps as well, because they don't do it properly over there.

    Towing 3.5 Tons?

AIUI, you can tow 3.5 tonnes on over-run brakes - i.e. ones that are operated automatically by the trailer. If the trailer has another braking mechanism (e.g. air brakes), then the Land Rover will need modifying, but the towing weight goes up.

    Pod & Courtesy Lights

I found on my Swiss spec LHD facelift V8 (got to be precise, it seems every vehicle out of the factory is unique...) that I needed an extra relay in the interior fuse box, which enabled both DRL and the courtesy headlights. Pre-facelift apparently have this built-in, but the fusebox changed and...

    Fuel economy

You really need to write down number of litres per fill and miles between fills in order to know, and that means brimming the tank each time to be really accurate.

    Cruise control fitted today

You need to be doing over 25 for it to kick in. If you know anyone with a Nanocom Evo, you can read the status of the CC with that - at least, I know you can with the V8, but I'm not sure about the TD5.

What's the point of the snorkel?

If you have the scoop intake facing forward, you can improve efficiency by forcing more air into the engine.... ....and then lose it all again because of the increased drag!

v8 will not make the music 4.2 to 3.9

It can be towed: just put the transfer box into Neutral. That way the auto box isn't being turned by the wheels. Alternatively, take the prop shafts off.

    Kinetic rope.

As a general rule, I wouldn't trust any rope over five years old. The elastic part of the kinetic rope will most likely have perished by now.

    16" or 18" tyres

I've had a few conversations with tyre fitters over the years regarding this - some of them seem to think it's OK to put smaller radius on, but when they check they find they shouldn't.
