    Car shaking to bits

well then its almost certainly an out of balance drive shaft caused by a worn CV or UJ in the front axle area. it might be a dead engine mount as well, but that's easy to check. Is the vibration more speed or RPM related?

Intermittent sudden loss of power issue

Agree with previous posts. On my old TD4 it was falling fuel pressure due to failing fuel pump.

Well you have shot VCU bearings or a shot VCU. One trick is to make sure the VCU is straight in te slotted holes when you tighten up the bearing carriers

    Welcome to the refurbished LandyZone

I've been on bulletin boards like this since the early 80s, long before the internet. Which I helped build. Change for its own sake is seldom beneficial. How's them new fangled square wheels doing on yer hippo?

smoking and lumpy td4 on start up

That's because there is no definitive answer. you have a wrong fuel mixture when cold, but not when warm. - You need more fuel when cold slightly, so marginal fuel pressure can cause this. - You need glo plugs to help start when cold, so bad glo plugs can cause this. - You need more fuel when...
