Hi all,

My cousin has asked me to try and fix his freelander and just thought I would see if any of these symptoms rang any bells with you lot before I start the trial and error approach.
He says: Its an intermitent problem, Sometimes when he gets to some traffic lights the revs will surge while idling, then when he tries to pull away it lacks power to the point where the engine will die if he is not careful also black smoke coming out of the exhaust. He also says it will sometimes start with the black smoke randomly when cruising ( Not just when accelerating ) . No warning lights on dash board except for the traction control light ocasionally. Its had a new air filter recently, fuel filter was last changed in 2013. egr valve has some oily residue but not restricting air flow that I can see. There is no other service history with it so I assume its not had a crank case breather filter recently, if ever.
I have had a look at the intercooler pipes and cant see any splits or soft spots.

Just wondering where to start really, The breather filter? fuel filter? egr bypass kit? The reason I mention the egr bypass kit is because a local mechanic has said he thinks it is the egr valve causing the problem, I thought it would be the intercooler pipes but I cant see anything wrong with them.
Oh and he also said that giving it a good rev sometimes temporarily cures the problem, when I looked at it earler it was black smoking when I revved it while it was parked on his drive.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

James

Hi James,
There are a couple of posts on here to consider.
hit the search button and type in Sticking EGR Valve, you will get about 5 or 6 pages of posts come up, lumpy driving, cutting out, black smoke.etc.
sounds like an EGR bypass valve "could" solve the problem.
Check vacuum pipes, the vacuum filter....(clear thing at the back of the air box that looks like an old petrol filter)
Also... the fuel sensor may need a clean (as per link below)
Usually worth-while changing the crank case breather valve / filter.
I'm awaiting parts for mine... including the EGR Bypass, it all comes to a whopping £42.00!!
Not worth missing off the servicing list really.

Thanks for that info and the link . I have ordered the egr bypass kit and will post back here with the results when it arrives and ive fitted it.

could be the turbo hose is split. dead easy fix. big fat hose (3" dia or so) at front right of engine, If its covered in oil underneath and split, fit new one. less than 20 quid and less than 5 minutes

check all turbo hoses the common one to go is on the right which is called the elbow and then the next is the one on the left both at the front there is also one at the bottom like a S but this seldom goes , this will cause loss of power and plenty of black smoke also for the money I would go for those from DPH derby performance hoses worth every penny and you can get the better clips from them to.

stupid question Jameszzz - but have you diconnected the MAF sensor to see if it helps?
It did for me! - I was gutted when I replaced fuel filter / pump etc. only to have the fault... I should have taken the plug off the MAF first :-(

Thanks for all the replies,

Ive had all the intercooler pipes off and cant see anything wrong with any of them.
I did the egr bypass and cleaned out the inlet manifold ( an got covered in black gunk) took it for a test drive and the black smoke seemed to gradually clear when it warmed up. However I have a sneaky suspicion it isn't going to be long before he is bringing the car back to me. When the turbo kicks in it accelerates like a rocket ship, but before it kicks in at low rpm its not got no guts at all, Its kind of like turbo Lag, But ive just read that they have a variable vane turbo so does'nt that mean the turbo should be working from a lower rpm , Could this be the MAF sensor since it only lacks power at low rpm? (Ive only just seen your post xpuser8334)

The problems the freelander still has:

1.Seems to lack power at low rpm
2. Intermitently Has 2 amber warning lights ( TC and what looks like hill decent ) Recently had the prop removed so is only front wheel drive now ( Just read it could be the brake light switch )
3. Has a strange short click / screech when it reaches very high rpm ( sounds like it could be something to do with the turbo ) Though I wouldn't expect the car to be reved that high when driving.

Thanks again for your replies, I would have been lost without this forum.

I don't think you have anything to lose by disconnecting the MAF then giving it a try..
Hill Descent.... hmm... has the gearbox been off lately? could (not definate) be the first gear / hill descent wire on the gearbox... bad connection, come lose or something along those lines.

Hello,
I own a 2003 TD4 Freelander.
I have the same 3 problems:
1. Seems to lack power at low rpm and lot of black smoke around, sometimes engine dies.
2. Intermittently has 2 amber warning lights (TC and what looks like hill decent) - it is still 4WD nothing removed.
3. Has a strange short click / screech when it reaches very high rpm I steel accelerate I hear the sound as it accelerates, but it does not go in higher RPM only it sounds like the injectors running very fast.

Have you found something to resolve this problems?
Many thanks!

Hi Stefan - Ive fitted a egr bypass kit and blanked off the vac pipe and also took the inlet manifold off and cleaned it out which hopefully should increase the air flow quite alot. When I took it for a test drive the black smoke gradually cleared so I am hoping I have cured the black smoke issue and if not I think my next step will be to double check the intercooler hoses and then remove the breather filter on the top of the engine and clean or replace it, thats if my cousin brings the car back.

The 2 amber warning lights I mentioned earlier - im going to check that its not the brake light switch and also check the wiring to the switch on the gear stick.

The lacking power at low rpm - think I will disconnect the maf sensor and take it for a drive and see if its any different.

As for the strange noise when the turbo kicks in.... errrr no idea lol.Unless its something to do with the gubbins( Technical term ) linked to the turbo sticking or something.

When I push the throttle pedal the car hesitates, and after I kick it to the floor the car gets away, but leaves a lot of smoke behind.
Sometimes I hear some strange noise from engine like crack /click /screech as it detonates fuel maybe.
If I remove the vacuum hose from EGR this problem does not show.
Idle has some variation it goes between 770 to 800. Not more, but the fluctuation is obvious.
I think I got some sticky EGR and also maybe pressure sensor STC 4648 problems.
Any ideas?????
