    wipers and paint code

My '80 certainly has two-speed wipers. Check that somebody hasn't swapped in an older single-speed wiper motor and bodged the connections, and check that the switch is putting +12v out on different connections when turned.

    Learning curve ahoy!

Adjusted and working nicely so far. You can tell it's a league ahead of the Intermotor in quality.

    MOT and speedometer

No, it's a pass - I've got several cars with kph-only speedos, there's no problem at all. The only things a speedo can fail on are being obviously broken or missing - so the needle having fallen off, or the glass smashed - or the illumination not working. Even that's fairly new - and the...

    Towing a series 3

Legally? No, you can't. Anything dangling along behind a towbar is a trailer. Any trailer with a max laden weight over 750kg has to have all wheels automatically braked by the towing vehicle. The dolly wheels might be braked, but the towed car's wheels aren't. Yes, you can get braked dollies...

    Over drive unit

Have to admit, the thought of a higher top speed doesn't exactly fill me with glee and anticipation, given the brakes and suspension...

    Learning curve ahoy!

It's just arrived - and you can feel the quality is WAAAAAY ahead of the Intermotor one, even without opening the bag. There's a sticker on the back, with adhesive barely clinging on, that gives a stock delivery date of 1990... so it's old-stock. Great! Even better, it was £12 delivered, and...

    starter or battery

Neil - where in the country are you? I'm sure it'd help if there's somebody around you who could have a quick look and tell you whether you've got a pup, or whether you've just got some teething niggles to work around.

    Learning curve ahoy!

Well, somebody somewhere said that the Intermotor brake light switches were a waste of money. They may have been right. I've adjusted it four times now, and they're not working again this evening. Lucas switch ordered. I don't want to have to pay £40ish for a genuine, but... It's a sodding...

Zenith 361v Mixture screw and vacuum

You haven't mentioned the throttle stop adjuster screw. If you give the engine a whiff of throttle, will it idle with no choke? (From the wing side, have a look at the throttle linkage - you'll see a small screw, probably with a similar plastic shroud to the mix screw, which sets the position...

    Spare tyre and MOT questions

Thanks, guys. I clearly need to do a bit of thinking on this. Rear door would probably be best - and, yes, I can just move it upwards, and at least the spare will hide the dozens of grommets required as a result... <grin>

    Spare tyre and MOT questions

...and the reason I'd not noticed it is that it's not there. The bulkhead's completely smooth, the full width and height. Looking in the parts list, the rib bolts on as a spare carrier, and is listed as "not SW"...

How do I get proof of build date for DVLA

£22 dating letter should do it.

    hazard warning lights

1980 is the cutoff date for needing a fog light - but, again, if fitted to older ones must work. Reversing lights aren't legally required even on new vehicles now, and are never tested, even if fitted. Which is just as well on ours...

    hazard warning lights

It's in the angled dash centre section on our 1980. They're not required pre-'86, but if fitted must work. m4s01000402

    Speedo rebuild

It's an interesting theory - but wouldn't that cause the odometer to lie, too? And it wouldn't account for the speedo staying at 30 when the speed dropped, and 20 after being parked for a day. A mate on one of the classic car mags has sent me some more stuff that expands on the PDF above, and...
