Please for give me I have searched but can not seem to find the answer I went to look at a series 2 today and the boss came with me as she is into landrover's to. and the man mention flat out it would do about 50mph now I know you can fit an overdrive unit would this make much difference to the overall top speed.it has the 2 and a quarter petrol engine in it.

It depends on what engine is fitted, petrol or diesel. In spite of a lot of claims to top speed some time ago one of the forums ran a thread to give real world answers to the speed of the Land Rover. My 2.25 diesel cruises nicely at 48/50 MPH. Any more is hard work for it and it lets you know with an increase in noise, ear plugs are sometimes required in old Land Rovers mainly due to transmission noise. A good petrol 2.25 should see 60ish MPH, one with a 200 TDI engine a lot more. I have run petrol and diesel as well as a V8 110 speed machines they ain't.

hi, thanks for the answer, I thought that might be the case , my wife is now talking me out of it saying I should really go for a long wheel base with a better engine in it as that is what we had planned ,but for the purist there is a problem with it in that it has a later bulk head fitted and so he has had to fit the later clocks but does not look bad though .

Careful that it actually a series 2 chassis. Some unscrupulous people say oh it's just a later bulkhead , when it's really a vin plate swap to a layer vehicle.

Yep, 2.25 petrol will happy do 60 and with an od a bit more from time to time but the real advantage is far better economy.

My ambulance will sit at 60 on motorways happily enough but taking it down to 50 gets you loads further for the same amount of juice.

I'd love an overdrive but a non screamer is expensive

Have to admit, the thought of a higher top speed doesn't exactly fill me with glee and anticipation, given the brakes and suspension...

The brakes and suspension are not too bad just don't swerve around like you're in a modern motor! The brakes, if correctly balanced, will stop you quite nicely from 90mph...once! Then you need to let them rest before doing it again, it will take you a while to get back up to that sort of speed again though. The suspension on an early rangie will try and turn turtle if you swerve at anything more than 40mph.

What engine are you running? Some 3.54 diffs are worth considering.
