    Zenith carb mixture adjustment

I've just been going with this on mine today. One little wrinkle made the mixture adjustment screw do absolutely nothing - and that was that, on removing the screw, the groove down it was COMPLETELY blocked with old varnishey muddy gunk. MOT fail on mine was very low CO (~0.15%) and slightly...

    Learning curve ahoy!

It's now idling, and seems much happier on mixture. I've not got a gas machine, so it's a bit guesswork - mix screw fully in, out 1.5 turns, set idle speed as low as it'll idle at (still sounds a bit busy, but...) then mix screw out until it sounds happier. It's still not perfect, but somebody...

    Learning curve ahoy!

The speedo illumination is definitely just a dead switch - it's bypassed for now, probably for ever. Am I _really_ going to want to have a dark dash with lights on...?

    Learning curve ahoy!

90% of it, yes. And much of the rest is on my "learn soon" list (including welding), now that I've got somewhere proper to work in - the garage has only just been built in the last couple of months, and there's a lift going in it by spring. If I wasn't fortunate enough with that, I've got a...

    Learning curve ahoy!

<grin> Already done. When did they change? The week they built this! There's a surprising amount of metric on it, including brake pipes with one imperial union and one metric... Very much still live! In fact, I've just put it back into the garage ready to start this pm on some of the MOT...

    Learning curve ahoy!

Zenith, with fuel cut-off solenoid and EGR (blanked off). The little moving contact in the end of this one is rusted absolutely solid! Definitely the speedo! According to one of those handy road-side speed-check signs, 30mph is just where you think you might want to change down from 4th...

    Help with a brake issue

    Ah! That makes sense...
  8. T

    Learning curve ahoy!

And the MOT man, he say... "Bugger off". Two things I knew about or was expecting :- * Outrigger - I'd taken it for the test BEFORE getting that welded in, to see what else needed doing. * Emissions - CO 0.15, HC ~1500. No great surprise - it's not idling once warmed up and off the choke, but...

    Help with a brake issue

Because whoever did the brakes last time couldn't be bothered to put them back... I can't see it being a big problem, tbh - yes, it should be there, but once the drum is on, there's no way the shoes can come off the support at the bottom - there just isn't enough movement.

    Learning curve ahoy!

Yeh, I test-drove one. That was, frankly, enough.

    Learning curve ahoy!

It's insured, I've put ten miles on it now, and the MOT is booked for Thursday. The clutch bites VERY high, and it won't idle when it's warm. But - apart from that... It's slow, noisy, bouncy, cramped, uncomfortable... and I bloody love it.

    Road tax exemption pre 1975?

DVLA don't normally have manufacturing date, unless it's been explicitly provided for some reason (such as this). By "31/12/75", they just mean "1975ish".

    Learning curve ahoy!

Ah, life has moved on. With the help of all those who've answered a couple of other threads, we now have a Landy that's on all four wheels and damn near ready for the first attempt at an MOT since 2010. It's got to swing by a mate's workshop first, to stick the new outrigger on, but the half...

    Over-enthusiastic rear brakes...

Well, the new springs were visibly shorter and feelibly(?) stronger... and sho' nuff, it works just fine.

    Over-enthusiastic rear brakes...

Yep. Even backed right off, it's doing it. The adjuster is, of course, on the other shoe.

    Over-enthusiastic rear brakes...

I've chamfered the top of the shoe on one side today - and it doesn't grab any more. No, it just chatters badly instead. Definitely needs a better spring!

what year did the rear number plate change sides?

So long as you can find 'em in the post-01 font, there's nothing to stop you putting them on brand new cars now.

what year did the rear number plate change sides?

Anything first reg after 1/1/73 has to have reflective, but B'n'W would have been the exception, rather than the rule, for quite a while before then. Reflectives were introduced in the late '60s.

    Over-enthusiastic rear brakes...

Thanks, guys. Yes, the upper spring is only on the front shoe, and the back is more-or-less left to fend for itself. The lower springs are fairly weak, too. I've got some new ones on the way, and might even double-up, plus a bit of chamfer.

what year did the rear number plate change sides?

Foglight is required on everything registered after 1/4/80. Our late '80 (V-reg) 88 has the plate on the left and fog light on the right.
