Having just had a similar problem, my vote goes for UJ's on prop shaft! Looks like the bearings disintegrated long time ago, metal on metal for some time. Easy to check.

Are you able to get a pressure guage on the Fuel Regulator? Was the new fuel pump OEM or aftermarket?

Yep, the Universal Joint! Finally managed to get it off, now running 2 wheel Drive with Difflock on. Further question, noticed a slight oil weep at front diff oil seal where prop shaft connected, is it an easy enough job to replace this seal why I am at it?

Continuing saga: Managed my 300 mile round trip but towards the end getting really bad clunking when taking foot off power. Yes, you've guessed! Its not just the wheel bearings.. Checked under when taking wheel off, (after using scaffold pole as tommy bar) looks like the front prop shaft CV...

Are you confident on the fuel delivery to the injectors? eg Fuel Pressure, pump, regulator and injector seals?

Or Disconnect the battery if you can't find the right fuse...

Glad to hear it! This injector seal problem is looking like a favourite first stop for running problems along with fuel pump issues. Certainly worked for me. :D:D

How good is your battery? Don't be fooled by the fact it seems to crank OK. ECU needs a healthy battery. Have you tried jumping battery to assist?

The wheel nuts are a problem that has come back to haunt me! Should have done something about it before when I put new calliper and pads on front O/S. Was going to change pads on N/S but could not get the nuts off. Tried socket with tommy bar, then used 6ft scaffold pole extension. - Bent tommy...

Photo does not show the crucial bit! If there is no box on the pipe in front of the engine block, (behind the viscous fan) then it is EU2. I have same year defender TD5 with old dash etc. :cool:
