Have you ever performed a rescue mission?

Come to think of it, four times. Pulled a Transit out of a ditch with the Freelander - OK that's boring but it was on the Black Sea coast in Turkey... Also did an almost rescue on Dartmoor, also in the Freelander 1. Got a message one of my girl cadets was unconscious, phoned the police to...

Do you sleep in your Landy?

The real problem is condensation. I've slept on a board in the back of a 109 (cold), in the boot of three discos (200, 300 and D2) - had to go diagonal as I'm 5'10 - in the front of the D2 (uncomfortable) and in the back seat of the D2 (surprisingly comfy). Haven't tried it in the Freelanders...

300 TDI white smoke on start up

sold it years ago. Solved the problem though! Not sure how else to solve it - would have needed a new crankshaft, I guess.

300 TDI white smoke on start up

My 200TDi had clouds of white smoke for a while on startup. It turned out to be a worn key on the crankshaft pulley, which was putting the injector timing out. Cured by welding the pulley on.

300 TDI white smoke on start up

Possibly your glow plugs. Old diesels with no glow plugs smoke a lot (blueish white) on start up. Some engines just do it anyway - we had a sherpa with peugeot engine that always put out clouds of smoke when cold.

Anyone had problems with specific head gaskets?

Bear in mind that there are different thicknesses (four I think from memory). Did you use the correct one? And remember to use metal dowels. Cracked heads are common on this engine, so you may be right about the head. Next step is to have your head pressure tested by a specialist. If you do...

    Td5 mpg

Having had both, the TD5 auto got 23 in normal driving and 33 on long trips at 60mph. The Freelander 2 manual gives me 27 around town on a cold engine and around 40 at 70mph. And it's nicer to drive. Aaaargh, gerroff, leave me alone you lot, I don't care! Nurrrrse!

    Bio diesel anyone?

Depends how you brew it. If you make proper biodiesel yes you can, although I was advised not to go above 50%. Make sure you do it properly though as it's an expensive system to repair.

    2008 freelander 2.2 diesel

The service schedule is at http://www.freel2.com/gallery/albums/userpics/11157/Maintenance%20Check%20Sheet%20%28EU%29%20Miles.pdf . As far as I know there is no published maintenance manual, but you can access one online somewhere on a pay-as-you use basis.

    Disco TD5 Prices

Landcruiser should be more reliable but is boring as hell to drive. TD5 is quite reliable but expensive when it goes wrong. For the money you want to spend you ought to be able to get a fairly recent vehicle with a reasonable warranty.

abs hill decent and traction warning lights?

The following are alleged to cause the "three amigos" problem on TD5: 1. Worn or non-genuine brake shoes (said to be no.1 cause in US). Rattle or squeal can apparently activate sensors. One user reported that a rattle from a loosely secured brake pipe had set his off. 2. Faulty earth...

Help 1.8 freelander - white smoke

Um - is this petrol or diesel? If it's diesel, white smoke with a cold engine (smells of diesel) means your glow-plugs are not too good. With a hot engine (petrol or diesel) it usually means cracked cylinder head. But then it usually smells of anti-freeze. From your description of the smell my...

    Towing

If you tow a large trailer without +E on your licence, then you don't have a licence to drive the vehicle, so you're not insured? So probly a bad idea.

Why can freelander drive well in snow/ice?

I've had 2 Freelies and a Cherokee. If you're worried about build quality on the LR then don't even go near the jeep. Both suffer from (comparatively) poor ground clearance so that might be a problem in deep snow, but otherwise the Freelander is great (my first one was S reg and totally reliable...
