Strange (ominous) engine behaviour. Not sure what to make of it

I hate to be the agent of doom but my diagnosis would be a cracked head. Quite common on these, and the white smoke is a tell tale - sniff it and see if it smells of coolant. If you have been topping up with water only this will make it worse as the engine needs a strong antifreeze solution to...

    Reduced Engine Performance

Service schedule is at http://www.freel2.com/gallery/albums/userpics/11157/Maintenance%20Check%20Sheet%20%28EU%29%20Miles.pdf You may find this site helpful, as it's FR2-specific. However there is an awful lot of c**p about which polish to use and how to upgrade the satnav, fit alloy wheels...

    Landrover Td5 Fuel Economy

The EGR is designed to reduce NOx emissions, which are not tested under the MoT. Removal will probably lead to more efficient combustion, which makes a pass more likely! In my experience, the main reason for removal is that the EGR can eventually stick open, leading to a loss of performance...

Disco2shaun - good luck with the new business. Do check that you are allowed into the emissions zone before you bring it to London next year. Big fine if not. Unit17: LEZ Vehicle Check

    Freelander 2 GS SD4 new!

Lovely car, although as with all cars there are one or two bad ones out there. I wouldn't do this forum down as its a great resource, but the Freel2.com site does cater more for people with new vehicles (although you have to skip the threads about different makes of polish, not to mention the...

    grabber tyres-getting warm-normal?

Tyres with chunky tread can warm up. I used to have a pair of vee-pattern Wranglers on a Series III that got really warm, but only on wet roads. I put it down to the chunky tread flexing in use. But that's only speculation.

Blue smoke on start up any ideas.

Well done! That's one that wouldn't have occurred to me. Last had water in fuel in my dad's car - must have been about 1958...

Blue smoke on start up any ideas.

Are you sure it's blue not white? What does it smell of? If it's oil it is more likely to occur when hot, and it will smell of oil or burning. If it's greyish white it's unburnt diesel, will smell of diesel and means your glow plugs aren't working. If it's white and smells of anti-freeze then...

    Knocking from underneath

Mine (S reg, from new) always had a bang from the front suspension going over humps. I assumed it was a design feature.

    Freelander 2

Yes, mine's a GS. Only extra I'd like is a satnav. Many people seem to think the heated screen and heated washer jets are a must. If you want bluetooth phone you'll need the higher spec radio as well. Whichever model you get, make sure it has a jack and a spare wheel (preferably alloy). Other...

    FL2 high clutch bite

I think it's a hydraulic clutch so the height of the bite should not be relevant to clutch wear. But it shouldn't be abnormal, so something is wrong. There are a lot of problems with slipping clutch on these, usually due to either the dual mass flywheel or to the internal clutch adjuster getting...

Good bye 300tdi... LONG LIVE 200tdi!

I've had one of each - the 300TDi I bought new was a nightmare and I eventually took it back and swapped for a Freelander. The 200TDi came 3 years later from a friend who was emigrating. Had 100,000 on the clock and although it needed a fair bit of maintenance was nice and reliable and pleasant...

Can my 300 Tdi disco run on cooking oil.

The TD5 is fine on 50% biodiesel. Opinions vary about using pure veg but I wouldn't do it myself - it's a very expensive engine to repair if anything does go wrong!

    Freelander 2

Get a diesel unless you have access to ridiculously cheap petrol. The autos are better off road; the manual has better consumption and a nice box, but a few people have had clutch and flywheel problems. What to get depends on the age - on earlier ones the basic model is just that - no cruise...
