    Compression Test Procedure (petrol V8)

Wont do any harm to remove the fuel pump relay. I have normally just disconnected all the HT leads at the plug ends. Make sure engine is warm and throttle is open when you take the reading. Do each cylinder dry and then squirt a bit of oil in and repeat the process. Expect to see a difference...

did the P38 ever get sorted out?

It sounds like a good age/mileage mix. Its 10 years old so air bags should have been replaced. Check that they have as if not this will be one of the first things you need to do. Check for any signs of coolant loss. Little leaks or Mayo in filler cap. New water pump, radiator etc. Ask if it has...

    Dear Landyzone....

I'm assuming that when you replaced the discs that the judder goes away for a period of time. This pretty much rules out the impact of wheels and tyres. I had a similar event on my '97 which developed brake judder 2000miles after new discs. I built a simple jig that allowed me to check if the...

Which petrol engine oil filter - does it matter

Clearly there will be a difference in quality between the different manufacturers. Not sure about the non return valve thing though. I have always used Mahle. I believe the are a good middle of the road product and priced right. Some of the professional mechanics on here will have a more...

    yet another crock of sh1te

Is this Storm's car? Its got his name on it...:D

    Rough idle and acceleration

You have got to start with the basics. Check each plug for a strong spark, compression test each cylinder while you are at it. If it is a coil pack it will be pretty obvious with the testing.

    Shock Replacement

As Clarky says rear top bolts are super tight. Might be worth a touch of plusgas or similar penitrating spray first. I needed a large breaker bar and a fat bloke to get mine shifted.

Doing a "Auto-box oil change how to" any suggestions?

When I did my first oil and strainer change I failed to notice that there are two O rings on the strainer. I missed one and result is really messed up gear changes as air is mixed in with the ATF.

    battery reading ???????????

I seem to recall from physics or chemistry lessons many years ago that a simple cell had 2.2v. There are 6 cells in a 12v battery so in theroy you should be able to measure 2.2 x 6 = 13.2v. However there will always be a volt drop across the multiple cells so a realistic voltage reading is...

New owner and yes,an EAS problem, sorry

Not sure what age your Rangie is but I believe on the later models (post 99) that the sensors can be swapped from offside to nearside.this would let you see if the fault follows the sensor. Wammers will confirm.

    temp guage

It sits front and centre on the top of the engine (as opposed to the bottom where the thermostat is). If my memory serves me right if your car is pre 1999 then it will be coloured green and if it is 1999 or later it is coloured brown.

Camshaft replacement whats the signs ?

Easiest way to check cam follower is to set a straight edge steel ruler on top and hold it up to the light. If you can see light between the ruler and follower then they are worn. Remember that the cam follower spins in its housing so the wear pattern is dish like. Very difficult to spot wear...

    Rust protection.

I did all 3 of our cars last summer. I just used the waxoyl hand pump. I just drove each car up onto my ramps so I could get more access. Front first and then the rear. It seems to have worked very well.

    1st Landy - 1995 RRC called OLLI

Nice story. I'm not a fan of big white cars- they always make me think of what it would be like to drive a snowball or if you are taking stuff from the boot it looks like you are attempting sexual relations with a giant sheep. Your not Welsh by chance :D That said it does look like a clean car...

Radiator leak and damaged condenser - confused.....

If the thermostat is open it means coolant is passing through the Rad from the second you start the engine. It will take significantly longer for the engine to get to operating temp. With your new Rad installed cooling efficiency will be at it greatest.

    a very special P38

I must say I do like the interior but would like to know more on the engine / gearbox. Can you tell us more?

    Squeaky Steering

Yeah mine only groaned when turning left as well. Mind you its now someone else's problem as I sold it on Saturday.

    It must an age thing.

Your lucky the metre or battery didn't blow up in your face. When you select current your metre effectively acts as a short circuit and shorting out the terminals on a battery is never a good thing. My metre has a 10amp fuse fitted to provide some protection.

    And then there were none....

Both rangies sold this weekend. Really sorry to see them go. Only 2 Cherokees left. Hope the new owners have as much enjoyment as I have had. Fingers crossed I will be able to find a nice one when we get to sunny California. Packing company arrives tomorrow.....:(

Radiator leak and damaged condenser - confused.....

Sounds like your theromstat is shot. Temp guage should rise to around the halfway point. The theromstat on a 4.6 is a big thing with 4 pipes attached - maybe one of these is leaking. They fail open so will prevent the engine reaching normal operating temp. Also rember the cooling system is...
