I need to replace the waterpump on my 4.0 thor p38. Its also leaking oil from the front and sump. So ive decided to do the water pump, the oil pump and take a look at the big ends and replace the sump gasket and the front seal
Whats the sign of a camshaft thats coming to the end of its useful life. My cars done 134k miles.
If i dont replace the camshaft 9if i look at the advise given)would it benefit from a new chain and sprockets. I was thinking of doing the whole hog as you need the whole front end off anyway to do this job.
With the engine in situ it wont be possible to replace the cam bearings, do these wear badly.
Also last question what the size of the nut on the driveshaft end ?
As i dont have a crank tool i was thinking of large timber in the sump (when the sump pans off of course ) to jam the crank whilst untightening. Is the casting tough enough ?
Lolts of questions i know but a little advise will stop me dreaming of sheared nuts and more like shear stockings !!
Ps Ive already replaced the waterpump with a Britpart £25 one which lastewd about 2000 miles. The end play was that bad i could see the fanbelt moving about 5mm float. Luckily i kept the old factory one and put that back on , but thats leaking now . I replaced it as a matter of ppm but that was a wiast of time qand money.

New chain and sprockets would restore cam timing to where it should be, as the chain stretches and the cam wheels wear the timing strays. Unless the cam looks mint (unlikely at that mileage) I'd replace it, replace the lifters with OE ones - many pattern lifters are hopeless - even the branded ones coming from specialist performance cam manufacturers are often not up to the mark.

If any of the cam lobes look heavily worn, then replace the rocker shafts and rockers, swarf from the dying cam lobe invariably ends up damaging them, the mains and big-ends are usually good indicators of swarf-inflicted damage. If they are mint then it's possible the rockers and rocket-shaft are okay - however there's less clearance there so swarf that might pass harmlessly through a big end may wedge itself into the gap twixt shaft and rocker.

You'll be surprised just how bad a state a Rover V8 camshaft can get into before you notice at the wheel!

thanks. Already had the heads off so had a good look at the cam. All looked well in the cam and the lifters , so I think i'm going to take your advise and replace the spockets and chain.
If i ever have to do a strip down on top again i will replace the rockers and shafts.
Do you know what size that bolt is at the front as i dont want to get to it and run around after a socket i dont hasve

Cam followers need to be perfectly flat with no dishing and be put back in the place they came from if you are keeping the cam. I think you said 175K i would be bloody amazed if the cam was not flatting out on the lobes at that mileage. You need to take it out and mike it up.

Easiest way to check cam follower is to set a straight edge steel ruler on top and hold it up to the light. If you can see light between the ruler and follower then they are worn. Remember that the cam follower spins in its housing so the wear pattern is dish like. Very difficult to spot wear just by looking at it. If the followers are worn replace the camshaft as well.
