    Auto gearbox issues

When (not if!) it happens to my wife's Hippo, I'll replace all solenoids as a kit. Once the oil cooler is out of the way, and the plate is off, replacing solenoids is a child's play. Doing it on the ground might be a bitch, but on the hoist it's easy-peasy.

    Major brake failure.

There is not enough room inside the drum to allow the piston to push the shoe so far out, that piston overtravels. This shoe was not installed properly, and the shoe never had the right contact with the piston. Piston overtraveled, and the fluid leaked out. Garage that did the work is at...

    Leaving freelander ownership

From the frying pan, into the fire.
  5. D

    just bought this freelander

There is a special spray for the MAF. I would use only what's recommended. Never tried carb cleaner. Why experiment?

    just bought this freelander

Freelanders are fun. Nice to drive (when they do), and they have some inherited problems that need to be addressed after the purchase. One is well advised to check EVERYTHING. Replacing worn parts (even if they still work) can save a lot of headache (and in some cases loss of the...

    terraclean

It would be helpfull if they told you WHY it failed. Over here there is a general "rule" to drive ANY older car for about 30 miles, with revs above 2500 (lower gear if need to be) before bringing it in for testing.

    Difficult to get in gear!

I'd put MY money on that too. And I would take it off (on the side of the road, if I have to), and take it to the local welder. Cheap fix.

    Hippo's done.

I am happy to report. As some of you recall, it was purchased off of junk yard, with broken timing belt. It was sitting with hood/windows open, for three months in the CA rainy season (not much rain in SoCal, but still). Dust, moisture, industry fallout, etc. wreaked havoc with the fuse boxes...

    Help with purchase advice please

Used car dealers. Nuff said. They do it all the time. "It was converted to 2WD for better fuel economy" (or something to that tune). Fuel savings in 2WD are not measurable (VERY, very minor). The fact is,.....they took the car in with a bad VCU/IRD, decided they have too much money in it, and...

    What would Jesus do??

Ebay is great for purchasing a LOT of things, but I don't think the cars are in that category. I was in the car business for about ten years, and I never buy a vehicle before I can test drive/check out. I still buy and sell frequently, and for fun. But not for living. Too many things can go...

    Hippo misfires!

I guess I'm lucky that I have more than few vehicles, and no repair/diagnostic is ever urgent. I've spent few days thinking about it, and devising the plan of attack. That said,...all of us in this post were right! Nodge68,.....yes, the wipers are a "red herring" (no connection to the rest)...

    Hippo misfires!

The odor of the unburned gas, is telling me that #4 is not firing, and it's dumping the fuel into the exhaust manifold (hence the smell and the smoke). This (in my mind) eliminates fuel pump. Wife says there was no warnings of any kind, except "service engine soon", and the whole thing happened...

    Hippo misfires!

Well, it started again. As some of you recall, I had the coolant boiling on wife's 2002 V6, and the stat, recovery bottle with cap, and intake manifold gaskets were replaced. All was good for about a week, and the wife was happy (happy wife=happy me!). Last night she came from work in panic...

    Geting hot.

No Lad, I drive one on the left. Given that I was in the car business for a while, I have a trouble with trusting dealerships, service departments, and the mechanics in general. So I work on every vehicle we own.

    Geting hot.

It's done! What a bear of a job in the barn at 100F temp. Soaking wet, greasy up to my elbows, but Hippo is purrring. New stat, pipes, coolant tank and the cap. No more pressure, no hissing, all good. Thanks to all who offered the advice. I hope I don't have to do it again any time soon. ;)

    More disappointment :(

Buying an used vehicle is a CHORE. I generally stay away from the "dealers", and shop private party. Used car dealers, are just that,....used car dealers. They make up stories, they mispresent facts,.....the usual. Private party is similar, but at least it comes without dealer shennanigans...

    Intake manifold gaskets on V6

I don't mind it being plastic, but they could've placed it in a better place? Of course if it's easier to get to, it would not bring as much revenue to the LR service departments, would it? I bet in couple of decades, vehicles will be designed in such way, that DIY will be totally impossible.

    Intake manifold gaskets on V6

Thanks. I figured that out. I have some heavy duty zip ties (about the same width as the original clamps), and I'll use that. This whole thermostat set up looks Mickey Mouse to me. I'm surprised nobody came up with some "relocation kit" by now.

    I'm sensing a money pit!

I'm not going to tell you something new. You know that transportation costs money (there is no "free ride", no matter what "they" tell you!). It all comes down to math, and in the case of used vehicles, with a bit of gamble. If you look up a new vehicle cost (probably financed), multiply the...
