Well at near 190,000 it's no surprise the tappets are a bit worn :p
Do you know what type & grade of oil was used at last service ?
If they used 5w-30 then it might benefit from a 5w-40 or 10w-40 oil ?
7000 miles is still a long time since oil change , Most on here change there's every 6000 miles ( I know LR state 12000 but ? )
You could try an engine flush then change the oil & filter see if that helps .

Just saying that BMW built the td4 engine about 1999 & only used it upto 2002 in there cars , But used up the engines in the freelander till 2006 .
So @ 15 years it is an old diesel engine !
My owners manual for my 2000 TD4 does state 10w-40 acea A3/B3 but all the oils seem to be A3/B4 now , Like Castrol GTX & magnatec ?

opie oils lists the freelander TD4 as using the a1/b1 ford type oil , Its also a5/b5 if you look on the label so should be safe ?

Mine is an early one with the fuel filter in engine bay .
I got it slightly wrong as it's under the right drivers side rear wheel arch !

I think the body will rot away way before that or the transmission will blow up !!
Your be lucky to find a second hand one that's not rusty , Is it that bad can it be rubbed down and painted with hammerite ?
I have a spare one in the garage somewhere that's just a bit rusty but solid ?
