hi all

just a quick question

noticed today out side when engine running on my td4 there is a strange smell not quite diesle but almost a dirty smell

just woundering why ? its turned cold could that be it? does the fuel or air filter need changing ? glow plugs?

the car is running spot on ,not missing or anything ,does seem to have used more fuel than normal i must admit

any ideas?

to be honest i dont no

i have had a look under the inner wing and cant see any pipe/exhaust (was told there should be one there)

its a 2001 model ,was told older td4 came as standard ,later models come as extras and cost ££££££s

but i dont no when the td4 came into service so not sure if mines classed as a older or newer model

is there any think in say fuse box etc to say if it has one

The exhaust comes out of the underside of the front bumper on the passenger side (UK models)

If it's working you will hear it!!!

As said the exhaust pops out in front of the passenger side front wheel underneath the hippos front wing........if you have one and take it for a short spin on a cold morning you'll still hear it running when you switch the engine off.....and possibly venting some smoke from the exhaust under the wing.
Also on first start up in a morning the high pressure pump can be prone to leaking from the piston caps......these normally seal once it gets some heat into it and if it is leaking you'd find fuel on the under tray and eventually on the floor under the engine bay.

The TD4 late 2000 > and the early one's are more likely to have FBH as standard depending on spec .
It took me 5 years before I knew I had one

could one of your injectors be leaking ,I had one leaking on my old freelander.and going unnoticed for a while the diesel turned into a solid piece around the injector

i will have a look at the injectors ,as when i got the car the part of the engine cover that covers the injectors is missing ,so maybe the last ower has been looking round that area and never told me

When do you notice the smell most? Is it coming from front or exhaust? Or through the vents when you have the blower on?

Is it worse driving or sat idling?

it seems to be coming from the back when idling ,i woundered if it was choke (i assume it has one ) but it even seems to be there when engine is warm but its just that it almost smells like dirty diesle if that makes any sense, car seems to be running spot on

as for my clothes ,sounds like im just like you then lol as im quite often in oily clothes as i mess with cars often
