Alright then, I'll try and acquire the necessary tools tomorrow. What would happen if I was to fit new rings and leave the bores in their current, de-glazed, un-crosshatched state? -Tom

Thanks for that Shifty. I gave each bore about 10 seconds up and down with the drill, there is a very slight cross hatching effect but the angle is extremely obtuse. Do you think I might have over done it? The pistons pushed out by hand when I removed them. It took a good shove, but not one of...

I will see if I can get hold of a cordless drill tomorrow then, at least they have a truly variable speed so I can get a good cross hatching. Do you think it's possible that i have taken off too much metal at higher speeds? I gave each bore about 10 seconds. I had my dad spraying the bores with...

I did go up and down fast but my drill's slowest speed is 1200 RPM and it's not too easy to match. Would you suggest I borrow a cordless drill and do it again to get cross hatching? -Tom

Okay, pistons came out today and I have deglazed the bores. They have gone from this: to this: It doesn't have the same cross hatching as a proper hone would but will this suffice? It has etched into the cylinder wall nicely. In the third picture you can see a vertical score mark in the...

Okay, thank you. There's a lot to consider really. It's all relatively straight forward and it does make sense but I need to make sure I keep my wits about me! I've ordered standard sized rings from AllMakes 4x4 so I have no idea who the manufacturer will be. -Tom

Thank you for the explanation. So basically, I am going to deglaze the bores with my three prong honing tool. Then, I will open a single pack of rings and push them about 3/4 of the way down the bore using the piston to ensure that they are flat. I will then use my feeler gauges to check the gap...

This is what it says in the 200tdi workshop manual. Which bit should i be paying attention to?

Oh, okay thank you sir, it would be much appreciated.

Thank you. :) When you say further down, do you mean about 1/3 of the way down the bore or further? I'd assume they should not need too much gapping if they are specifically manufactured to fit a standard size bore in a 200tdi? Obviously I will check.

Well I have decided to do the job properly. I have ordered a set of four standard sized piston rings from AllMakes as well as a set of big end shells. I bought eight new follower assemblies last week which are sat ready to drop into the block and my cylinder head is back from the engineering...

No but I will do now you've suggested it :) I am going to give the bores a top-end deglaze (with the pistons at BDC) just to take the polish off. That will certainly clean it up if it is just a water mark. -Tom

I have a little more reason for concern now. I have cleaned up the top deck today and I rotated the crank so that I could wipe the bores clean of metal dust and I noticed this in cylinder no.3, should I be concerned? I can only very slightly feel it if I run my finger nail around the bore. Would...

All my new bits arrived today. 8 new Allmakes follower assemblies consisting of guides, bolts (metric & imperial) slides and rollers, Elring 3 hole head gasket, manifold gasket and head bolts. £106 all in which I think is very reasonable. I haven't heard anything back from the engineering shop...

    TVG 2.8 Owners and Clutches

Is there any scope in making something from an Iveco / Isuzu or a small truck work? 2.8 litres of diesel power is not tremendous by any means in the general scale of things. It's a fantastic engine for a Land Rover but there are 4x4's out there with much beefier engines that don't seem to suffer...

Found the part number for the complete follower / tappet guide assembly (RTC6564) Tappet Assy (Complete) 200/300Tdi - Land Rover Part RTC6564 which is NOT to be confused with the set and part number that Turner Engineering have on their website. -Tom

    Lumpy 200tdi when cold

Thick white smoke and a lumpy idle from a cold start which then clears and progressively smoothens out as the engine warms up would seem like air in your fuel to me. It could well be other things and no doubt someone will mention your glow plugs but tdi engines don't really need glow plugs to...
