Hey all

Got a discovery 200tdi in my defender, noticed when I got out of work today started up and it sounds quite lumpy, until I drive a few miles and it warms up, anybody have any idea what it might be? Just started it now, it's been sat for an hour and it sounds ok, because it's still warm I think

Cheers

Could be a number of things. Start with the easiest things such as air in your fuel. It is quite possible that fuel might be draining back down to the tank from the fuel filter. You can test this by removing the fuel filter after the vehicle has been sat for ~5 hours. The filter should be full to the brim, if it is only 3/4 full or less then it is certainly draining back. Is there any smoke from the exhaust if you rev the engine from a cold start? If so, what colour is it?

I did notice that it smoked quite a bit more than my old 200tdi, and its more thick and white ish, not too sure because its dark when i start in the morning and when i finish, cheers Tom, what would you say about the smoke?

The disco engine in my s2 had started doing just this, sometimes its a real lumpy idle
Always smooths out when warm but if left ticking over for a while will start to go lumpy again.
Its on my to do list!

Thick white smoke and a lumpy idle from a cold start which then clears and progressively smoothens out as the engine warms up would seem like air in your fuel to me. It could well be other things and no doubt someone will mention your glow plugs but tdi engines don't really need glow plugs to fire up and they should then idle uniformly. It will tick over slower from a cold start but it should never be rough or lumpy. Take the fuel filter off and check it's not clogged first and make a not of the fuel level in the filter. Also check all of your fuel lines for signs of leakage / damp. Pay particular attention to the spill rail pipework between the injectors (small lengths of rubber pipe). If you have a split, tear or a loose connection here, air will find its way into the system and fuel will find its way out of the injectors meaning that every time you fire up, the fuel system is priming (expelling air) before it runs correctly.

If it is not air in your fuel, it could be an injector that is sticking or dribbling, low compression or a number of other more expensive things. I had a similar problem and an intermittent misfire for well over a year. Only this weekend have i taken the head off and actually found there to be quite a few problems inside the engine which I am now now with sorting. Mine ran rough all the time though, even when warm.

I think I've found what was making is feel lumpy, I've just put Silicone Hoses on and there's no give in them, the intercooler pipe is resting on the bonnet soundproofing and it transfers all vibration through the bonnet and cab, I'll start it with the bonnet open tomorrow morning and see how it feels  Cheers Lynall :D

Cheers Tom

As I mentioned above i think/hope the hoses are causing the lumpy 'feeling'.

As for the fuel, I also think that your right with it, There seems to be a slight amount of diesel around the injectors and spill rail. I have some spare fuel rail pipe to replace whats on it now, I'll also, as you said, check the fuel filter, and have a gander at the fuel lines, even removing them and blasting through them with a air line again might get rid of some rubbish in them, after all the engine was sat in my dads shed for a few months, any rubbish could have found its way into the fuel lines. Thanks again Tom :) Really appreciate your help :D Dave
