    changing gearbox / diff oil

Haynes manual is outdated. I know, I've got one. Go to your LR specialist and ask for your money back. Dexron II = ordinary ATF Dexron III = synthetic ATF. Your gearbox should NOT have ordinary red Dexron II in it if you want it to last. But it's your vehicle and your money, after all.

    Clean up after EGR removal

Clean the pipes with engine degreaser, soak overnight is best. Holts make exhaust sealant in a tube, white stuff, works well. Or don't bother if your plate is thick and flat, chances are it won't leak anyway.

How much brake fluid will I need?

I wouldn't buy 5 litres, not in the UK where it is damp. The fluid will absorb water and become useless. Even in our garage in Africa where it is dry most of the time we buy our brake fluid in boxes of 20 x 500 ml bottles. Don't dispose of old brake fluid - keep it! It is wonderful stuff for...

    landrover steel wheels.

My 1995 110 came with wheels marked 5.50F x 16 x 33 (NRC7578) I always reckoned the F meant that the rim was supposed to have tubed tyres 7.50x16 as fitted when new, though many people fit 235/85R16s to them. I replaced them with Wolf rims (ANR4583) which are 6.5J x 16 x 20.6, and I always...

How much brake fluid will I need?

You can just get by with 500ml, but preferably buy a litre, then you won't run out while bleeding. I do this a couple of times a week and always remove the plastic reservoir which is either held in by the rubber plugs underneath or on older vehicles by pegs. I then fill the cylinder with a...

    A Little Blue/white Smoke

I own a 300tdi and work on both. If you have changed a TD5 head you will know why I don't like working on them much. Both engines will crack their heads when overheated, but on a TD5 it costs a lot more, about a kidney's worth. We are now seeing TD5's with high mileages and they seem to last...

    changing gearbox / diff oil

And preferably do not put ATF in the R380. The spec was changed to MTF94 in 1997, before your car was made! If you can't get that oil you can use a 75 grade Manual box oil such as Castrol VMX. I have heard that the best change and wear properties come from using a fully-synthetic Dexron III...

    300tdi bottom pulley 'loud'

You don't need loctite on the bolt, just use the locking tool and do the thing up to the correct torque, 80Nm + 90deg. Unfortunately most DIY'ers can get the bolt off using the starter motor, but can't do it up properly. We have rescued a crank or two by welding and regrinding the key slots...

K&N Air filter for TD5 engines

Mike, if you are to stay in the UK the K&N may be ok. Just don't go anywhere that has a dusty environment. It also depends on how long you want to keep the vehicle. Maybe sell it on Ebay - they aren't cheap!

    Hi-lift jack?

I am hoping to sell the LR jack to some idiot. Haven't met one yet.

    Popping out of diff lock

I agree. Move the main gear lever until it doesn't cause this problem. Don't go to the stealers they will just rip you off.

    Hi-lift jack?

I can't say I practice what I preach cos I travel with just a high-lift as well and have changed 2 flats with it so far. The bottle jack, LR rubbish jack and the Chinese cheepo trolley jack are in the garage :)

how do i get to the rear suspsension air bags???

Dead easy, jist look there. There is an air connection 10mm spanner and a couple of clips. No problem even for a beginner to change the air springs.

    rocker cover

See what the pressure is like with the oil filler cap just resting on the cover. If it blows it off when you rev the engine you are in trouble. Otherwise change the gasket.

    not starting

Charge the battery for a start.
  16. J

    A Little Blue/white Smoke

Ignore it. Or sell it. When buyer arrives make sure engine is warm... TD5 engine is not really fixable once worn. Flog it quick and buy a Tdi

    Stolen landys

Best to take off the steering wheel when you park it. Or come to South Africa, nobody steals Defenders here for some reason. Or hijacks them, so many people buy 90s for their wives to drive to work. Much safer than a beemer or a merc.

    Hi-lift jack?

But the standard LR windy windy jack with ratchet handle can take years to lift a wheel off the ground. You are better off on tarmac with a bottle jack, and in mud or whatever with a hi-lift. And back in the garage with a trolley jack. I think this was what the original question was about :)

    Free Workshop Manual

And amazingly enough, if you want a manual for the South African made SIIIs (aka R6) you have to go to an Estonian web site to find the manual :)
