    series 2, TD5 engine rattle

The Biglad....I guess with an auto you will need to get a spanner on the crankshaft bolt - I think the engine turns clockwise viewed from the front. The adjusters are just like tappet adjusters and screw in and out with a flat bladed screwdriver and are locked in place by the lock nut...

    series 2, TD5 engine rattle

Hi Dave, Firstly I am no expert! but... I have been on a mission to quieten down my Disco 2 landmark and I seem to have finally succeeded. The adjustment is pretty straight forward.. 1. I do it from cold ie let it stand overnight. 2. Remove the plastic cover on the engine. 3. Remove the...

    series 2, TD5 engine rattle

Hi Richard, I have just been out and re-done the injector clearances and it is now VERY quiet - only the slightest diesel knock when cold which goes away after a few minutes of driving. I was very careful to get them bang on the highest point of the cam and then tighten them up FULLY with a...

    series 2, TD5 engine rattle

Hi Richard, Looks like you are landrover enthusiast! Dont get me wrong - the car has many endearing features and i do like it a lot - it is a pleasure to drive and has a fabulous support network (forums like this etc) and readily available cheap spares but if you have to have it re-mapped...

    series 2, TD5 engine rattle

Hi, Since I have run the car for a week or so a bit of the "clatter" re-appeared (at about the same revs and conditions as yours) but it is MUCH more noticeable when the engine is cold. A bit of accurate re-adjustment quietens things down. I found that I had to nip up the adjuster quite tight...

    series 2, TD5 engine rattle

hi, I had a similar problem and eventually tracked it down to the injectors... I assume the noise is the typical diesel clatter / knock....? you may find that one of the injectors is worn or maybe needs adjusting. Correct adjustment really quietens them down a lot... here is the link...

Just bought Disco 2 (54 plate) with new engine - boy does it clatter when cold!

Final postscript... just for information.. I ran the vehicle for 500 miles after fitting the new injectors and a bit of clatter returned.. I had to adjust the injector clearances again ... they were slightly out and after a final adjustment all went quiet again. hence the importance of...

Harsh / rough engine above 2500 rpm in all gears - is it normal?

Update.... The new engine mountings are now fitted and made a big difference! (thank God!). It cruises at 80 mph now with just wind noise and a bit of a drone from the engine so I guess its as good as it is going to be. The old mountings were goosed - the rubber bits were resting on...

How to change engine mounts Disco 2 TD5?

Herte is the info from the Ozzy Land Rover forum.... To see if your engine mounts have collapsed crawl underneath and there should be a 10mm+ gap inside the bottom of the mount to the base of the rubber (small round hole). In this case the rubber was pressing out the hole. (same with me!)...

Harsh / rough engine above 2500 rpm in all gears - is it normal?

Hi all - been away sailing for a week - the engine mounts have arrived so I will fit them this weekend and let you know if it solves the problem.. they both seem to be goosed - the rubber is down at the bottom of the mount housing. I believe there should be a 10mm gap - mine are touching! John

How to change engine mounts Disco 2 TD5?

Many thanks.. I will give it a go next week... I assume the new (genuine) mounts did the trick and made the engine quieter to live with? John ps - just been out to check them and both engine mounts show that the rubber insert is resting on the bottom of the metal dome so I guess they are...

How to change engine mounts Disco 2 TD5?

Hi, I am told that worn engine mounts may cause the engine to sound harsh at motorway speeds... has anyone any experience of this? In particular has anyone changed the mounts and can offer any advice about how to do it? John

Harsh / rough engine above 2500 rpm in all gears - is it normal?

hmmm... I had a good long run yesterday up the M6 and after very careful listening I am pretty sure the engine is causing the noise.. it sounds very much like an out of balance front prop shaft but it pretty much goes away when the throttle is backed off. Its hard to tell really. I have a...

Harsh / rough engine above 2500 rpm in all gears - is it normal?

Yes the old engine mounts were re-used.. I will check them asap.. do you know how to change them - is it tricky? I have changed all the oils now and the transmission all sounds sweet - I am pretty sure the harshness is from the engine. A few people seem to think it is normal but I cant...

Advice from anyone who has a de-cat on a Disco 2

Thanks - I am hoping that a de-cat will cure engine "harshness" at higher revs - above 2500. Would you say it did on your vehicles? I have checked everything else-- transmission, prop shafts, etc... just about everything that spins has been checked except the engine mountings. Hope the...

Advice from anyone who has a de-cat on a Disco 2

Did it make any difference to the engine at higher revs - eg above 2500 rpm? Was it any smoother - less harsh? also... removing the cross member - I am told I need a deep 10 mm socket - anything else likely to cause a problem? ta
