    fishsponge's ongoing thread of problems!

Oh boy,,,,, Well the snail thingy is a vibrational damper, just leave it where it is :) Order a trakrod rod and two ends, don't bother trying to undo the old unit, if shop can't shift it you never will! Not too pricey and worth it, cover threads on new rod end with copper-slip etc and fit new...

how much smoke is too much

Afik diesels if properly tuned should only smoke black on hard acceleration and never heavily. On constant load ie cruising they should be clean.

    Cam Cover Gasket replacement

300tdi? Just a smear of oil, don't yank down on the bolts too much or you can deform the cover permanently just enough to seal is all. Watch the back edge of the seal as you put cover back on, it's easy to get it caught and gives a good oil leak.:)

Is there any slop in the steering from steering wheel to wheels?? Is this on a flat road, they do suffer from 'tramlining' quite a bit.

    Ignorant inept newbie needs advice.

I had those pipes go on my disco, fuel consumption increased and performance dropped plus the trailer tent I was towing got covered in fuel. Replaced them and instant fix. If the cloth covering is wet then they are leaking, I carry a length of the pipe with me now.

    Who can cure ABS problems?

The shims are thin pieces of metal placed under the top swivel pin which is found on the front hub, the ABS sensor goes through the middle of it. It keeps the bearings that the hub swivels on under tension, if they become slack they allow the hub to wobble which in turn will let the ABS sensor...
