Did you get it warm by driving it around or standing still ? I'm asking because I'm preety anal about monitoring my head temperature and, even climbing a steep hill with the AC on, it doesn't reach 100C. If the AC fans are kicking in just by reving the engine, there's certainly something wrong...

The fans are tripped off from a thermo switch installed to the 3rd port of the cylinder head. It's a simple on or off switch that comes on at 100ºC. Is this too high a temperature ? The LR engineers seem not to think so... :lalala:

Since this is a 2000 DHSE, it already left the factory with the system to switch on the A/C fans for extra cooling. IIRC this is factory spec from MY99 on.

Probably should do a sniff test before taking the head off. If it shows combustion gases on the coolant and if the head gasket is solid that can only mean bad, bad news...

Sorry to hijack this thread, but what you're (Wammers) saying is that post-99 models have a thermal switch to enable the HVAC fans in cooling the radiator, just like all the V8s ? I was under the impression that none of the diesel models had that feature..

Just to chime in that I had a leak from there and I cured it by changing the gasket that defender300td1 is refering to.

If this is your daily runner, I would consider replacing the valve block o-rings as preventive maintenance while you also check the compressor. It would be interesting knowing beforehand why the schraeder valves were fitted.

And after checking everything as per Wammer's advice, if it's still overheating, do a sniff test for gases on the coolant before loosing too much time with it.
