Evening guys,
Just a quick one, am I right in thinking the temp gauge sensor is the one nearest the front of the head, next to the FIP on the Diesel engine? Secondly, the engine in mine came out of a 1995 BMW 325tds, is the sensor the same as the one in the Range Rover?

Cheers Wammers, the reason I ask is when I took the old engine out I kept the old sensors and when I went to change the BMW one to the Range Rover one the hole for it is bigger on the BMW engine's head. It is the one closest to the front of the head isn't it?

It is, above injection pump.

Black one on manifold is air inlet temp sensor for pre EGR engines. Pre EGR have two sensors on head. One just above FIP brown temp gauge. One further back green ECU temp sensor. Post EGR have Blue gauge sensor just above FIP. Same green sensor for ECU. 99 on have blue gauge sensor. Green ECU sensor and black sensor further back for Aircon fans. Black sensor has one pin others have two.
 
Sorry to hijack this thread, but what you're (Wammers) saying is that post-99 models have a thermal switch to enable the HVAC fans in cooling the radiator, just like all the V8s ?
I was under the impression that none of the diesel models had that feature..

They do post 99, mine has it, pretty useless though as it needs a serious overheat to get the fans running.

Yes for situations like in hot conditions when aircon is running and engine is at max temp. If you have been driving along listening to your tunes on the motorway then pull off onto a normal road and get stuck in traffic. At idle coolant circulation slows down. Fan slows down. Latent heat from the engine gets into the coolant and with the aircon loading the engine coolant temp will rise. When it does the sensor switches the aircon fans on to assist cooling.
 
A long time ago, maybe 2 years, I looked through the electrics schematics for wiring up the aircon fans to come up when needed, but completely missed that. Thinking back, I was using the 1997 electric schematics (mines a '98) so that won't show there.

Does anyone know at what temperature the switch closes ?

About 110C from memory. I can give you a simple mod to use the aircon fans for cooling with an adjustable stat.
