I wasn't aware that the Classic had such a thing as a vacuum pump, the latest MY I've owned was a '93 & that didn't have one. On my '87 3.5efi the vacuum comes from a small rubber hose connected to the plenum & provides the 'suck' for the fresh air flap (heating) solenoid & cruise control fitted...

If all else fails you could have the 'screen removed, so that any weapons-grade cleaning procedure(s) won't damage the car's interior & if that fails have the 'screen replaced.

I'm confident you will have a transducer, not a cable.

Not always, both the fobs with my old BM have non functioning LED's but still work fine, especially after renewing the rubber cover that incorporates the lock/unlock/boot symbols.

I used exhaust brakes on HGV's decades ago with varying degrees of success, depending on the veh. manuf. You need a large piston surface area & relatively high engine revs for an EB to be effective.
