Hi,

My Wife uses her Freelander 1 to tow our Daughter's pony in the trailer. She got back today and said that when she tried pulling away up the slight hard track incline the car would not move. She said she thought the brakes were on, but they were not. She said there was lots of white smoke.

The clutch was done about 2 years ago, so I am hoping it is not that.

Anyone have any ideas why it would lack power like that and not be able to move forward. In the end she managed to reverse the trailer and then change gear and it eventually crawled up the incline with plenty of revs.

Any pointers welcomed on this one as it sounds rather terminal

Sounds like clutch. Dunno trailer weight, but with a heavy load you really want low box to pull away on a steep uphill. If no low box you need to slip the clutch a lot, which knackers it.

:( Oh dear, not what I wanted to hear.

Just for my own understanding, what does low box mean?

The gear knob does have a yellow switch on it with a sticker showing a steep decline. Is that low box

The vehicle is really gutless though even when not towing the trailer.

The last time the clutch went it cost £1200 to replace :eek:

Freelander doesn't have low box, Defender, Disco and RR do, which is why they are the vehicle of choice for heavy trailers.

Maybe you have aproblem with your engine if its really underpowered, Im afraid I have no idea what is normal for this vehicle, but I have done a lot of towing.
 
Low range box is a low range set of gears especially for towing heavy loads or maneuvering slippery ground. A Freelander doesn't have low range. If you are towing on slippery surfaces and want a Freelander, you would be better off with an auto.
 
It's a TD4 2 litre

It most likely is not adequate for towing. The specs suggest it can tow a trailer and horse, but I think that might be a bit too much

ponies are little horses int they? :p
and, on this occasion, summat else stopped it from towing smartass ;)

i should've written it should be able to tow this combo!



the clutch may have gone or the tc dunt work or maybe his mrs had it in the wrong gear who knows or dint depress the clutch properly

I am no hoss eggspurt, but I bleeve the def of a pony is height related only so theoretically a fat un could be pretty heavy :D

or maybe his missus has cooked the clutch on previous missions and its finally given up the ghost on an upslope? Only guessing, it could be a number of different things, but that would seem to fit the bill to me. Any better ideas?
 
It is a light weight dainty sports pony. According to my daughter it weighs 350kg, so not much less than the wife.
